A Man Who Could Finally Afford To See A Doctor After Winning The Lottery Died Three Weeks Later

Along with the usual things that come with winning the lottery — a new car, a vacation — Donald Savastano was excited about finally being able to see a doctor after winning a $1 million prize in December.

The self-employed carpenter in New York told local media he hadn't been able to afford to do so because he lacked health insurance. But the doctor visit yielded devastating news: Savastano, 51, had stage 4 metastatic cancer.

He died on Friday, just weeks after claiming his prize money.

"He was self-employed. He didn't have insurance. He hadn't been feeling good for a while, I guess, and when he got the money he went in to the doctor," Danielle Scott, who worked at the store where Savastano purchased the winning ticket, told ABC 7.

The problem was he was SELF EMPLOYED.

Can’t have that.

Well, he was rich and probably white, so that didn’t matter to the swamp rats. Plus, he was a self-employed carpenter, so that probably created union jobs for at least three new immigrants of color. < / sarcasm >

Apparently, a lottery ticket a day doesn’t keep the doctor away

"The problem was he was SELF EMPLOYED."

Or that he spent his money on lottery tickets instead of insurance? I bet he could afford a cell phone and maybe cigarettes, cigars, marijuana, beer... No wait it just came to me it was the greedy evil rich Republicans!

This is impossible. Obamacare has been the law of the land for 6 years now and the mandate has been enacted for 4.

Why didn’t he have insurance?

He chose not to.

Looking at the picture of him with his wife & daughter I would say, probably not. Taking care of 2 women is expensive. At least it cushioned his death, financially, for them.

I’m inclined to go with Gorsuch here also.

The idea behind the Amendments was that your business was your own. The police had no reason to do the search, period.

I fail to see how property rights fit in here. If he had heroin in his pants, and the police searched him without cause, he’d still have a valid defense.

Now, I wouldn’t blame the car rental company for coming after the lady who rented the car if the police seized the car and were slow in returning it. She violated her contract.

But the perp walks in this case, IMHO. One for Gorsuch.

A lot of unknowns here. Was he a smoker? How long was he feeling unwell and was his cancer too far along anyway to make much of a difference? ObamaCare surely sucks but it may not be accurate to pin his cancer and death upon that and he did have options to buy insurance or go see the doctor without it.
Look at Senator McLame— best healthcare in the world but it will not save him from his fate.

Yup, he likely paid the penalty not to have Obamacare and made too much for Medicaid. Then if he DID have Obamacare, it would have been with a $6K or so deductible. CT scans are approaching $10K these days. Poor guy.
