That sucks- he went from having good to luck to having bad luck.
The problem was he was SELF EMPLOYED.
Can’t have that.
Well, he was rich and probably white, so that didn’t matter to the swamp rats. Plus, he was a self-employed carpenter, so that probably created union jobs for at least three new immigrants of color. < / sarcasm >
Lesson - seeing doctors can be fatal
Yes, this was under Obamacare.
The buzzfeed comments are the real cancer in this article.
This is impossible. Obamacare has been the law of the land for 6 years now and the mandate has been enacted for 4.
Why didnt he have insurance?
He chose not to.
I’m inclined to go with Gorsuch here also.
The idea behind the Amendments was that your business was your own. The police had no reason to do the search, period.
I fail to see how property rights fit in here. If he had heroin in his pants, and the police searched him without cause, he’d still have a valid defense.
Now, I wouldn’t blame the car rental company for coming after the lady who rented the car if the police seized the car and were slow in returning it. She violated her contract.
But the perp walks in this case, IMHO. One for Gorsuch.
A lot of unknowns here. Was he a smoker? How long was he feeling unwell and was his cancer too far along anyway to make much of a difference? ObamaCare surely sucks but it may not be accurate to pin his cancer and death upon that and he did have options to buy insurance or go see the doctor without it.
Look at Senator McLame— best healthcare in the world but it will not save him from his fate.

We will probably see more of this. A lot of people dropped health insurance to avoid going bankrupt courtesy of Obamacare.
Sad.
You can see a medical doctor anywhere in the country for less than $100. No insurance required. Just bring the cash or your credit card. Probably about what this guy charges per hour for carpentry.
Seems a lot of FR folks think you need insurance to get medical care. In the NY area there are many urgent care centers where you can at least get a professional evaluation with no appointment. I’ll bet most cancers that’ll kill you in a few weeks can be evaluated with one visit and no tests.
Are we really so stupid to believe you can’t get medical care unless we have insurance?
Wait..
So he couldn’t afford to see a doctor... but he had money for lottery tickets?
Just to be fair, this guy was probably a goner insurance or not. Cancer about killed me and I had great insurance and didn’t look nearly as sick as him.
