In an unusual emergency call, a mom of four young children dialed 911 last week, saying she had run out of options.
"I went to local churches and everything, trying to find food for my children," she told the dispatcher. "My kids have not eaten since yesterday."
"This is for police only," the dispatcher said. "It's not for this."
The distraught mom from Camden, New Jersey, said she was waiting for food stamps, which would take at least a month. She had no money, transportation or phone service, and the only number she was able to call was 911.
"If I could get some type of assistance," she pleaded. "If someone [could] come out. Help me with anything."
According to NBC, another dispatcher, Tondaleya Bagby, overheard the call and requested an officer go to the mom's residence to check on the family. "It made me sad. I couldn't imagine not being able to provide for my child," Bagby, also a mom, told NBC. When Camden County Officer David Hinton arrived at the apartment, he noticed there was no food, so he went to a local restaurant to bring food back to the family.

Thanks to the police but it’s not their job to pool their own hard earned dollars.
Exactly, where’s daddy? Where’s daddy’s family?
Four young kids? I’m guessing no of school age. She obviously doesn’t have the sense to keep her knees together when she can’t afford to provide for the kids.
Back in my CPS days, I gave a mama until 3 pm to get her house repaired (front door that was able to be closed and giant hole in front porch, etc.) and food in the house or else. It was so hilarious every time I drove by watching her “men friends” hauling in grocery bags and lumber and getting everything ship shape that I didn’t stop to do my official visit until after 5. If that mama could call in “favors”, so should this mama.
No one to call except 911? But she has a smart phone, Im guessing?
When they cut service for non payment they (the provider) must keep 911 available.
A few years ago there was a group collecting old phones to pass out to the needy. This allows those with no resources to have a phone to call 911.
You assume that this woman had full service, we don’t know, but it was noted in the article 911 was the only number she could call.
As for the dispatcher. If there are children starving, then you send an officer to investigate and then they can call child services.
It actually looks more as if the baby is yawning.
No Dad, and even odds that there will be a 5th child in the mix next time around. On the good side, there are 4 children who have been brought to term and delivered. But Mom really needs to examine herself and keep her legs together unless she is already married to the next Dad.
Painting Christians with an awfully broad brush there aren’t you friend? :/
This link has the full taped phone call from the ‘mother’ to the 911 dispatcher. You are correct - using a stock photo of a white mom and healthy baby is misleading and wrong.
Just because this lady says she went to churches and they turned her down, doesn't make it so.
There is no evidence that she contacted any churches.
Show me a church that would turn down helping this woman.
If one did, there a hundred more that will help her.
I would like to see the list of churches she went to.
This happened in Camden NJ. Enough said. Willing to bet this is a single mom with multiple kids from multiple fathers and is on welfare. She has no food, but I bet she has tattos.
Our welfare secretary finally got fed up with our “clients” (that’s what we were told to call the losers) bragging about their latest bling that she quit. They were taking home more than her 40/wk working paycheck. They’d whine that little Billy didn’t have any milk for his cereal all the while puffing on their cigarettes and telling others in the waiting area about the party they went to the night before and flashing their nicely done manicures. Yeah, their priorities conflict greatly with mine.
Why do white fathers pay child support under threat of jail and black fathers don’t?
Frankly there are all sorts of helps for food in her city......there’s something more going on we’re not hearing about.
I agree there’s something wrong with the women who let it go this far without friends or family stepping up.
And further it’s not true it takes so long to get food stamps...unless you’ve abused them and been denied for a time.
YOur frustration regarding churches may be misplaced. Many churches have found themselves being asked for assistance from “professional” moochers, and their response is a struggle within their faith.
Helping out the first time is appropriate in most cases. Helping out again and again, especially to someone who is simply making the rounds of charities and charitable churches is pushing it.
Most churches continually turn the other cheek, and help, time and time again. And the really good ones set up the “asker” with someone who is willing to help the “asker” solve his or her larger problem, seeking to eliminate whatever the root cause is of the current distress.
Perhaps you are actively involved with a local church. Perhaps not. You won’t make a change in their response, though, until you are. Lead from the front. It is easy to criticize from the back bench.
Agree...it is almost impossible to run out of aid and assistance in America. I hate to seem callous, but something is fishy here. She clearly cannot budget money, either. Why did her last food stamps run out? Maybe she sold them and used the money for drugs?
The poor woman must be an absolute wreck.
Maybe your church is that way but my church funds a lot of Oxy habits. When people ask for food, we take them to the Food Pantry where there is plenty. We hand out a ton of food locally. Almost every elementary school sends kids home with food every week.
But most people just want money. The government’s war on tobacco and alcohol has really hit the poor hard. Really hard.
The mother is admitting to a crime, child abuse and neglect.
The dispatcher should have immediately sent PD and CPS to the house.
BTW, where is CPD? Not mentioned in the article. Isn't that their job?
Never heard of The Salvation Army? Church-sponsored food boxes? Good grief!
Well, it could be that she went to a church that doesn’t have staff on site 24/7.
Frankly, not every church is set up with a food pantry etc. Mine’s not, nor do we have staff there during the week. Although we have a lot going on during the week. There is no staff. It’s all volunteer.
I also know churches that have stopped the food pantry because they get taken full advantage of.
I was at a community center once when a meth head walked in wanting a blanket. There were no blankets there and we offered to get him a ride to a shelter. He refused several times so we showed him the door.
We once offered a bum a ride to a shelter and he refused saying he didn’t like their food.
Good on the police officer for helping them today, but all he did was help today.
Sounds like the mother needs an income that’s courtesy of the fruits of her labor, not our labor.
Yup. And how does getting food stamps become an emergency, did she move from another state or just have 4 kids thrust upon her without notice? I’m guessing there are very few “single moms” with 4 kids who don’t know how to game the system to a “T”.
Maybe traded her EBT for drugs or bling.
What a sad town that is as is Trenton - the state capitol. Dems must have a lot to answer for in the next life.
