LODESTAR FIREARMS IS DEVELOPING A NEW SMART GUN CHAMBERED IN 9MM THAT IT HOPES WILL GAIN WIDESPREAD ACCEPTANCE AMONG AMERICANS.
A new smart gun company says its pistol will serve as the gateway to mass acceptance of smart guns in the United States.
According to The Trace, LodeStar Firearms based out of Philadelphia is in development on a smart gun chambered in 9mm and featuring radio frequency identification (RFID) tech which will ward off hackers. The MSRP on the gun will be about $750 and the goal is to have it available in 2019. The pistol is designed by Ernst Mauch, a former Heckler & Koch engineer who previously worked for Armatix but left after disagreeing with the way that company developed and marketed its iP1 pistol.
The already-controversial iP1 came under intense criticism last year when a hacker demonstrated that he was able to bypass the security system of the gunwhich involves firing when paired with an accompanying RFID wrist watchto make it fire a number of different ways, including using $15 worth of magnets.
That wont happen with LodeStars gun, says CEO Gareth Glaser.
The smart gun will have a non-magnetic lock and fire only when its within three or four inches of a chip, which would make it harder for the gun to be interfered with, Glaser claims.
In an interview with NBC Philadelphia, Glaser refers to the chip as a token which would be placed in a watch, or a ring, in a bracelet, or quite possibly implanted right here between your thumb and forefinger, Glaser said.

Well they can hope in one hand...and we all know the rest.
I’ll pass.
Damned right!
"...Why does *anyone* keep fooling with this concept?..."
NFW.
The absolute primary function of a gun, the reason it’s owned, is for it to go BANG in a life-and-death situation.
The #1 failure mode users most want to avoid is “pull trigger, no bang”.
That’s the whole purpose of this tech: cause exactly that to happen.
If this tech fails, as in a legit user tries to fire in defense of innocent life, it won’t.
The CORRECT failure mode is to fire on demand, even if the user isn’t authenticated.
“Does the manufacturer think putting an American flag on it will lead to widespread acceptance?”
They can’t be that stupid, can they?
Lol...so they are suggesting an implant so you will be the only able to fire the gun. Why not just implant the gun?
If something can possibly go wrong with it - besides the usual mechanical maladies that could afflict a handgun - that would prevent me from firing my own weapon, then I will NOT buy it, not even for $1.00. I will simply not reduce my chances of survival...let alone pay for that dubious privilege.
NFW will I buy this gun, or anything that operates on similar principles.
It can also be a bit clumsy in the middle of the night if you somehow can't get your watch on your wrist quickly enough when the killer is coming through your bedroom door.
I can think of at least 100 more scenarios where using one of these in an emergency is a really really really bad idea.
I WILL NOT COMPLY with any scheme to electronically control the firing of my personal sidearm.
Nope.
Not only will I not buy it, I’ve told the gun stores I shop at that if they every carry a “Smart Gun”, I will never shop there again. This is a deal breaker for manufacturers and retailers. Given the punitive laws that will come into effect if a “Smart Gun” hits the market, I want everyone from my local dealer to BudsGunShop to Remington/Ruger/Glock to know that I object.
All of my guns are already smart guns. I follow the firearms safety rules 100% of the time. That’s all the “smart” that is needed.
If I assume that this actually comes to fruition, there would be SUBSTANTIAL risk of liability should the gun fail to fire when needed.
Their failure mode is, and I predict, an expensive paperweight.
I worked at a bank some time ago. Part of my job was installing and repairing the millions of locks there. The locks were set to “fail/open” ... if the power went out all the doors and vaults would automatically open so as not to trap people. I suspect these smart guns will also be set to misfire under many circumstances; i.e. within 500 yards of a school.
I would state that in no way would I replace any of my guns with this piece of crap but then all my guns were lost in a freak boating accident... so... ya know...
A very pricey brick.
No Thank you.
To each his own. Maybe if I had young children in the house I’d be somewhat interested but reliability would need to be near-flawless.
