Based on the first month of the year, casting announcements for feature films appear to be way down this year compared to last year. Between January 1 and 27th 2017, Deadline reported casting news for 39 different feature films. This year, the website has reported casting news for only 23 films (a decline of 41%). Voiceover casting was not included in these stats.
This doesn't include all castings. The other trades (Hollywood Reporter, Variety and The Wrap) don't have a separate section for casting news (all film news is reported together). So there's no way to know the exact decline. But I follow those websites and they've all been very slow this year compared to past years. Most of the stories are about awards, scandals, politics, and box office.
Could the decline in production be attributed to the #MeToo scandals, with many productions cancelled or delayed due to producers and directors dropping out? Or is the the poor box office of most films outside of major comic book and blockbuster films (the low/mid budget films don't do well globally)? Or maybe a bit of both?
Well, well, well!
Could there possibly be consequences to hair-trigger paranoia
,false memory syndrome and elaborate profiling?
Makes sense. Harvey’s not going to be making any.
Yes, without free access to the casting couch why be a producer? Hollywood runs on $$ from producers, no fringe benefits I’ll just put my $$ in the Trump stock market.
More cr@p. Less cr@p.
There’s still too much cr@p.
Note to Hollyweird: My offer to go through your slush piles is still open.
Well, after the third remake of everything, I guess they ran out of ideas.
TV will be better ,Greatest American Hero ,Magnum Pi will be Women and Cagney & Lacey will be Transvestites ,LOL
Support alternative production companies that produce family-friendly entertainment, and the family-friendly channels that play that entertainment.
Law of Diminishing Returns....there are already so many movies out there, that do we really need new ones?
how many Star Wars and James Bond flics can they make ???
LOL. Can’t wait to not watch. :D
Good point! There are so many great movies already made.
Ditto for Rock Music.
That does seem to be the prevailing trend there lately, and now Spielberg will remake West Side Story. Who cares?
Seems to me a high-rated TV series is where you want to be these days. The quality of TV production today is the best it has ever been.
If you are keeping up with the news you will see that Amazon is already cutting back on it’s original films and series.
Well, they don’t seem to have an original thought in their heads either. Re-makes and PC garbage like the last ST isn’t going to bring people to theaters.
Maybe they should look at their own past successes, stop elevating liberal idiots to star status just because they can recite a few lines, and make movies that don’t rely on CGI and big names to entertain.
I don't know that Amazon really had that much success with their original series to begin with. I have Amazon Prime and it's not often I watch anything they offer. I mostly use it just for the free shipping. Netflix, on the other hand, has a lot of quality programming. Hulu and Starz are making inroads as well, and then there's the titan of all of them, HBO, which boasts some of the best series of all time.
Are they all throttling back or just Amazon? I don't think people are cutting back on visual entertainment as much as they're just not going to the movies anymore.
Yeah, I think a lot of filmmakers are moving over the cable and streaming. There seems to be a huge increase in limited series coming up.
