CBS picked up six pilots for the 2018-2019 season, including reboots of Cagney and Lacey and Magnum P.I.
Magnum P.I. is described as an updated version of the original series that follows Thomas Magnum, a decorated ex-Navy SEAL who, upon returning home to Hawaii from Afghanistan, repurposes his military skills to become a private investigator. Tom Selleck played the mustachioed Magnum in the original series.
Peter Lenkov, the writer and producer behind current CBS reboots of Hawaii Five-O and MacGyver, will serve as the writer and executive producer on the new version of the classic 1980s series, which had previously gotten a pilot production commitment at the network. Eric Guggenheim, an executive producer and writer on Lenkovs Hawaii Five-O, will also write and executive produce. John Davis and John Fox of Davis Entertainment will also executive produce. CBS Television Studios will co-produce with Universal Television.
Cagney and Lacey will follow the titular female police detectives and friends as they keep the streets of L.A. safe. Bridget Carpenter will serve as writer and executive producer. CBS Television Studios will produce with MGM Television.
Carpenter, who is under an overall deal at CBS Television Studios, recently worked as a consulting producer on HBOs Westworld and has previously produced and written shows like Friday Night Lights and Parenthood. She also developed the Hulu series 11.22.63.
The original Cagney and Lacey ran for seven seasons and 125 episodes on CBS from 1982 to 1988. The series also spawned four made-for-TV movies in the mid-90s. Sharon Gless and Tyne Daly played the title roles for the vast majority of the series, though Loretta Swit played Cagney in the original two-hour pilot and Meg Foster played Lacey for the first season.

No, Meg Foster played Cagney.
I only saw a few episodes but I rooted for Wo Fat!
Simon & Simon was fun.
What about “Sledgehammer!”
They’ll screw up Magnum PI. They’ll fill it full of stunts and shootouts. And worst of all, it will be completely devoid of the wry sense of humor that was pervasive in the original and made it so fun.
Theyll probably use a Tesla as the PC Ferrari stand-in.
It deserved a couple more seasons.
Sledge was great comedy.
Doreau was very pretty.
It ain’t going to be a Prius.... It’s going to be a Chevy volt
On Perfect Strangers, Cousin Larry said he could do a Cagney impersonation and proceeded to badly imitate him with, You dirty rat! You killed my brother. Balki said, Cousin, that was a wonderful Cagney! Now, can you do Lacey?
Wo Fat got a lousy ending in the old series but the show was about out of steam.
“I guess they fought crime, too?”
Hate to say this, but that was the premise of the old show. My wife wasn’t aware there was dialogue until I said something about it in the last year. She said, “There’s sound?”
This had nothing to do with acting or story line. It was Hawaiian coast and topless Tom Selleck. And more than half of the audience were women glued to the TV screen, literally.
rwood
They are liable to remake Combat! with a woman in the Vic Morrow role of Sgt. Chip Saunders leading a squad of all genders and sexual orientaion in World War II.
They figure it worked once, why can't it work again? Nothing succeeds like success. But yeah, I think they are rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic.
“Lets see....
Magnum PI: black, shaved head, and gay?
Cagney and Lacey: one black cis-female and one almost-caucasian pre-op trans-female (post-op in Season 2, with a developing lesbian plot line between the two).”
It wouldn’t surprise me one bit.
Talk about out of ideas. I just came across this channel on ROKU called the Pilot Channel. It is pilot episodes of shows that were made into series and those that were not. Some of the ones not picked up look kind of interesting.
If TV needs some ideas they need to go back and look at rejected pilots to see what might work today.
My football coach had a Dodge Ramcharger that looked like the one in Lone Wolf McQuade. Same color, had the push bar on the front, but didn’t have the light bar up top.
Greatest American Hero (with a female lead) is also being rebooted.
Didn’t they already try this?
From what you describe, it sounds like they casted obama as T.C.
How about a reboot of Tenspeed and Brownshoe??????
