Washington (AFP) - US President Donald Trump's administration has unveiled a sweeping new immigration plan to Congress that offers 1.8 million young unauthorized immigrants known as "Dreamers" a path to citizenship over 10-12 years.
In a comprehensive reform that will be formally presented next week, Trump also asked Congress Thursday to eliminate the popular "green card lottery" program and severely restrict family immigration, steps analysts say could cut in half the more than one million foreign-born people moving to the country annually.

It’s just like that pollock from Michigan who thought vandalism wasn’t a crime and didn’t think he should apply for citizenship after being here for 35 years. If ICE is administering the deportations liberal judges won’t be able to do a thing. Trump realizes the thing he MUST leave behind is an ICE that CANNOT be politicized and is completely dedicated to doing its job of enforcing the law as written.
A wall alone just isn’t worth settling for. We need visa entry/exit tracking, real enforcement, e-verify, and end to citizenship merely by being born in the US, h1b reduction/elimination, DIV visa end, chain migration end, etc.
They won’t support this. They need full amnesty, in the form of ten to twenty million illegals getting citizenship, and not the measly 1.8 million “Dreamers” being proposed. They want the full amnesty loaf and not a few slices.
Me too. Kick them out and make them get in line and do it like it should have been done in the first place. Either that or we adopt ‘meh-eek-OH’s’ immigration policies. Then we would see some lib heads blowed up real good.
I’ll save my opinion for the final deal.
For now I’m happy Schumer has 2 million dreamers thinking “I can get citizenship”. How many different ways can he blow that and how pissed will many of those dreamers be if he does? And if he does, Trump will be able to say “I tried to give you citizenship. That’s more than Obama did.”
Schumer is probably begging Cruz for help so he can blame Rs. But the fact is, Trump made an offer of citizenship and Schumer is the D leader to make it happen (or not) in the senate.
...t will be fun to see what Trump REALLY is going for here. :)...
Well, YOU get it.
Yes. Lets see.
They’ll all be acquitted by judges on account of their status.
Doesn’t sound like a good deal to me. 2 million more invaders made citizens, then the next Dem administration that has the House and Senate restores chain and lottery. We are left with a wall that won’t be maintained and is crumbling after 25 years of neglect and a yet-again gutted ICE told to look the other way.
Unfortunately, throwing them out isn’t politically possible. I believe the Dems knew they would be a key component of a long-term open borders strategy.
Lastly, im highly skeptical of any “sneak preview” of SOTU. The leakers so prevalent a year ago seem to have been dispatched or corralled.
Administrations will come and go, but a real ICE with a wall and enforcement tools that work - free of the politics that corrupt Obama administration officials forced on it - cannot be stopped or quelled in its mission. That will go beyond any administration.
Surely Pres. Trump and the Republicans will remember the farce of Pres. Reagan’s deal with the Democrats in his day. He gave amnesty with the assurance of the liars in the Democrat Party that they would provide better border security to cut the flow of illegals. The amnesty encouraged the parents of these DACA illegals to come to the USA, which was easy because there was no border security. Never make a deal with Democrat liars.
You make a reasonable point, but this sets a very bad precedent. Like Reagan's amnesty 30 years ago, the message it sends to future illegals is that as long as they (or at least the children they smuggle across) squat here long enough, they'll eventually be given a path to citizenship.
Furthermore, as you imply, this goes beyond the original 700 "Dreamers" (who were, allegedly, the best of the bunch - which means that they can write their name and haven't murdered anyone yet), it's now being extended 2.5x the number, and by extension their immediate family members. Is this a good exchange for 25 billion in funding for border wall/fence and an end to the lottery system? With a Republican majority in both houses we should do better than this, the reason we aren't is that many Republicans are immigration liberals.
Plus they don’t want a wall built, increased border security, nor an end to chain migration and the loose lottery system in place now. The Dems want a complete and unconditional open immigration system!!!
So you think a judge can just “acquit” someone caught dealing drugs or arrested for felony battery? I’d like to be around for that judge’s next election.
Is that sarcasm or just wishful thinking?
They would be out if they sell drugs? Hard to square that with the STATE of California investing tax money in black drug dealers to help them set up shop.
Sorry,does not compute... [beep beep]
That proposal should ONLY come into effect AFTER the wall is built, and AFTER it is certified that illegal immigration has been reduced by at least 90 percent for one year.
If it goes into effect before the border is secured, all we will get is massive amounts of new illegal immigration.
I’m no Kool-Aid drinker for anyone, including Trump, but I’m willing to wait for the details, specifically, WHICH 1.8 million “Dreamers” (I hate that friggin’ term!) will be ELIGIBLE, under what conditions and over what length of time? Under the right conditions, the final result could be much, much smaller.
Have you ever negotiated before?
