Theres a place for Steven Spielberg, and apparently its on New Yorks Upper West Side in the 1950s. A casting call has gone out for a remake of West Side Story, written by Pulitzer Prize winner Tony Kushner, author of Spielbergs terrific Lincoln screenplay and, of course, Angels in America.
Its a pro-forma casting call because, in the end, the new West Side Story is going to need stars. Big names. And because of the setting and the time we are in, its going to need actual Puerto Ricans or Latinos for the parts of characters like Maria, Anita, and Bernardo. There will be no fudging this in 2018. The casting call says in capital letters: MUST BE ABLE TO SPEAK SPANISH.

M. Night Shyamlan: The Sixth Sense
Coen brothers: Fargo
Cameron Crowe: Almost Famous
David Franzoni: Gladiator
And whilst both the Broadway play and the original movie had casts who were NOT teens, they weren't geriatric, over the hill, worn out nothings!
Today, there is NO talent in ANY way, in Hollyweird!
“_Lets face it, remakes generally suck. “
I’m not interested in gang knifm fights so I won’t watch it again for the second time.
I'm a Clint Howard fan.
I cannot imagine the remake being better than the original. It will make money off the reputation of the real show, so long as it’s not terrible, and if they don’t spend too much making it. But I won’t bother watching.
I hope you’re not a guy.
How exciting! A transgender Maria! I can’t wait! </sarcasm>
Never saw Fargo.
ALMOST FAMOUS was stupid and boring.
The Sixth Sense was just middlingly okay. And I've seen 3 or 4 of his other movies; which the more you see of his work, the less you like them. They are all contrived and akin to Jackson's novella: "THE LOTTERY", which was superior.
WHO?
Gladiator a remake??
Don’t remember the original!
What was it called?
Not “Fall of the Roman Empire”?
I just don’t see as the same!
You made my post for me! I wonder if people told Virgil the same thing but he blew them off. Ill just knock off Homer and call it the Aeneid!
There are still lots of great stories to tell, but risk aversion and PC are killing movies.
Fargo was really good. You should watch it. You’re right about the rest. :)
It's true! When GLADIATOR came out, they touted it as that.
Both movies are fine, but the original is better!
THE MALTESE FALCON was made 4 different times ( not counting the spoofs ) and two of them had different titles and the first remake, with Better Davis, deviated SO much from the book/story, you would claim that it wasn't a remake, but it absolutely was!
Very rarely, remakes ARE far better than the original; GASLIGHT is one and the other is Bogart's THE MALTESE FALCON, which is THE best of the lot.
Sorry...doesn’t ring a bell.
The pacing was perfect and the dialog was -- as usual for the Coens -- superb.
which is kinda what I thought of the original.
Yes it was. And the lady that played the pregnant cop was perfect and so unusual. And the setting. That was a culture I wasn’t familiar with. How bout the Chinese guy with the accent. Hilarious. Love that movie.
It'll be the Crips/Bloods vs MS-13 for control of the drugs/prostitution in the ghettos/barrios of LA.
Maria will fall in love with the Crips/Blood leader who is secretly gay and she is the sister of the MS-13 leader.
What did I miss?
What?! You don't know who Clint Howard is? The kid on the Andy Griffith show with the peanut butter sandwich? The kid on Gentle Ben. The bit actor in all of Ron Howard's movies?
Alright, I'll try one more time:
