Sen. Tammy Duckworth, who lost her legs in Iraq, calls Trump ‘a five-deferment draft dodger’
Washington Post ^

In a Senate-floor speech Saturday, Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.) blasted President Trump as a “five-deferment draft dodger” and accused him of trying to bait North Korea into a war, putting both the military and the national security of the United States at risk.

It was a moment of fire for Duckworth, a veteran who lost both of her legs in 2004 while serving in the Iraq War, and who has advocated for military and disability issues since she was elected to national public office in 2012.

Duckworth said Saturday her speech was prompted by a tweet Trump had posted Saturday morning accusing Democrats of “holding our Military hostage” to have “unchecked illegal immigration.” The tweet was just one of many partisan attacks Trump launched over the weekend trying to blame Democrats for a congressional budget stalemate that had led to a shutdown of the federal government.

That Trump would accuse Democrats — like herself — of not caring about the military was galling, Duckworth said.

The “has advocated” term means that she continues to do so. Saying “had advocated” (or just “advocated”) would indicate that she had stopped at some point. :=)

I think I should. I haven’t walked off like that in a few years.

My friends use to worry when I would do it but, I would always reply “God was giving me a pep talk and had to hear more”

I miss doing that.

Had a few shoulder surgeries that stopped me for a fee hears bit, it’s time to get back to solitude.

I have been around primarily Department of Army personnel for a little over 28 years. In large measure they are honorable people.

I have also seen them enter politics or civil service after release or retirement. For a number of them the Army Values dry up and blow away the moment they receive their discharge papers.

I believe that Ms. Duckworth, unfortunately falls into this category.

Look at the good it did Tony Soprano. I don’t advise the mushrooms, though.

Also recall Bubba - a well documented draft dodger.

Oh, piff.

Thank you for your service and sacrifice; now please STFU.

The reason why accusing RATs of valuing illegal aliens over the military was effective? It rang true.

I think so but didn’t know for sure. Just be sure you don’t get caught with your participle dangling.

While I’ve been known to occasionally split an infinitive, I’m quite sure that a preposition is a bad thing to end a sentence with. :=)

She should be reminded that Bill Clinton cancelled that card.

Actually, I think you're right.

has is defined as the singular present tense of have. So the past participle would be had advocated. But I'm guessing has advocated is no different than advocated. And if only the author wrote advocates, we could have spent our time on perhaps something more absurd such as politics.

FRegards, and goodnight :)

Regardless of your lame attempt at humor, Duckworth is a freakin lyin pos. She was elected because of her loss of legs and that’s a fact. It was ALL she ran on (insert your joke here heights) and her history with the VA is borderline illegal - I lost track of how far they got with investigating her abuse of funds.

Here in IL we are truly stuck with 2 of the dumbest Senators in the country - her and durbin are insane

Duckworth is a direct beneficiary of gerrymandering. She shouldn’t be in congress as far as I’m concerned.

Tammy,

1. Thank you for your service.
2. STFU about Trump’s draft status. You weren’t there.

Looks like Illinois has sent two loud mouthed idiots to the US Senate. Hadn’t heard much about this one until now.

Only if the shoe fits, darlin’.

OK, so only 98 out of 100 democrats don’t care about the military (but DO care about allowing unchecked illegal immigration).

If it walks like a duckworth...

When Bill Clinton was the draft-dodging POTUS, it was cancelled. When George W. Bush became POTUS, it was revived again, and his Texas Air National Guard was considered draft dodging by various dubious means, and John Fin Kerry’s three months in country and several “medals” that he threw over the fence while not throwing them over the fence made him the second coming of Audie Murphy. Now that Donald Trump is a Republican POTUS, and he’s old enough to have been eligible for the Draft before Nixon ended it, it’s a big issue again.
