To the best of my knowledge, Scientific American is not actually peer reviewed and has all the scientific objectivity of Pravda.

Collectively, the research indicates that greenhouse gas emissions have had an even greater effect on the climate so far than it appearsit's just that part of it has been obscured by the presence of air pollution. As the air gets cleaner, those masked effects will start to make themselves known. Global Warming can be eliminated if everyone buys a can of spray cheese.

Maybe what they're talking about is particulate matter.
The climate cools down after massive volcanoes put particles into the air.
But particulate matter could decrease and there would still be "air pollution" that some believe has an effect on the climate.
