I received a text from my Son In Law who is deployed in Africa. He sent me a text photo of the TV in the O-Club. All it showed was the logo of AFN...and a statement that said due to the government shut down, AFN will remain off air until the issue is resolved.
Now, I know TV is not "essential." But I sure as hell would not want a few thousand troops to miss the Conference Finals later.
Talk about a morale suck.
In the infantry we were trained by an advanced squad leader.

AFN and being stationed in isolated places that got the super bowl 2 weeks late, It was easy to cut the cable when I got out of the service.
Afrts is about the worst govt propaganda you can be exposed to. Tell him he is actually befitting from not having to hear it. Go outside! Take a walk!!

My first ship had a 7 layer thick rivvited hull at the keel. I beams running vertical thru the engine spaces!

Shutdown? OK, lets play some hardball. ANY politician that has a government paid cell phone, his/her service should be shut down as well. Until a shutdown effects “everyone”, none of the game playing will ever cease.
Prior to the internet we attached a feedhorn to an illuminator on one of our ships and had live TV. One of the Firecontrolmen wrote a program to keep it focused on the satellite. I’m certain most bases will find a way to rectify this, legal or not.
But there’s money to keep them in Africa?
In the ‘60s on the Forrestal, the only tv was in the ready room, that I recall (Maybe there was one on the Mess Deck.) And it only showed the lively action on the flight deck.

Our deployments were 9½ and 8½ months long with a fairly brief turn-around between.
Kent State came and went and probably 95% of us didn’t even know it happened.
I don’t think the actual problem is being identified here.
