Facebook is about to jump into the consumer hardware business in a big way with a video chat device named "Portal," which will put it in direct competition with Amazons hugely popular line of Echo voice-controlled devices, Cheddar has learned.
The device is designed to work in the home and represents Facebooks first serious foray into selling consumer hardware, people familiar with the matter said. Rather than position the device as a smart assistant akin to Amazons Echo speakers, Facebook intends to pitch Portal as a way for families and friends to stay connected through video chatting and other social features.

Facebook?
Yeah Right. I distrust FB more than Google and Amazon COMBINED.
Wouldn’t use that “Portal” if they paid me.
Probably censor out all the correct conservative info anyway.
Facebook.
(hock puti)
Great. Invite more intrusion into your abode. I’m thinkin’, nuh uh.
What is it called? Porkhole?
Bend over and accept your Portal(tm).
And it will record everything and capture your private information and use it and sell it.
You people are nuts!
All these people who — willingly — install Amazon Echo, or Google Home, or now this Facebook thing are crazy. It has been demonstrated that these devices listen to everything, as they are designed to do.
Recall all those who laughed at people who warned that your computer camera could record you? Now we’re installing devices so Facebook can be in our homes and listen to use, sells data it picks up from conversations, or screens homes for future Facebook banning or whatever. And it’s already occurred that Amazon Echo has been subpoenaed in a criminal investigation.
Just plain nuts. No way.
No, they are not nuts. They are retards. Full retards.
Hell will be totally frozen over with 10’ of ice before the likes of that machine ever finds its way into my house. FU, Zuckerberg.
The really sad thing is that a lot of folks are gonna make a bee line to Bestbuy to get this damned thing.
Let them. They’re fools, anyway. They almost deserve what’s coming. I’m caring less and less about them.
Wasn't this invented about 60 years ago?
Maybe it would be fun to get the Amazon, Google and FB devices, put them in a room with themselves and let them chat and record away :=)
I’m with you on this.
I’ve been a gadget guy since the 80s, and used to dream of the technology we would have in the “future”.
Now I dont want any of this new cheese. No watches, speakers, and AI “assistants”.
Siri, Alexa, Echo, now Portal......................
Facebook friends are not real friends necessarily. Why would you want them to hear and see everything going on inside your home?
Am I the only one who reveres privacy?
I’ve been a gadget guy since the eighties too and this intrusive technology is really becoming alarming. It seems that we are under nearly complete surveillance.
Probably overstated, but this trend is quite alarming. We probably need to arrange for any intrusive monitoring to be covered by warrants. It is getting ridiculously out of control.
