A blind Manhattan woman recently filed individual lawsuits against more than 30 businesses she says are not handicap accessible online.
Maria Mendizabal, who is legally blind, claims that the Web sites for companies such as Nike, 24 Hour Fitness, De Beers, Barneys, Donna Karan, and Kleinfeld Bridal arent compatible with screen-reading software that translates the written content into either audio or Braille.
Unless websites are designed to be read by screen-reading software, blind and visually-impaired persons are unable to fully access websites, and the information, Products, and services contained thereon, reads the suit against Barneys, which is filed under the Americans with Disabilities Act.
While Mendizabal has lodged some 34 lawsuits, another disabled Manhattan man, Victor Lopez, has filed 21 against companies such as Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus, Swarovski, and B&H Photo.

The ADA is one of the worst pieces of legislation ever passed.
It is written so widely that fleets of trucks can be driven through those wide holes.

We must all live our lives in submission to the lowest common denominator.
She should sue Ford and Chevy too. For obvious reasons...
More out of control ADA act; my tiny town has blown more than one year’s annual budget on ‘improvements’ to keep the lawsuit vultures away.
But I have to ask; shouldn’t the lawsuit be against her ‘screen reading software’ which isn’t able to actually ‘read’ the screen?
Even fast food restaurants have braille menus available at the drive thru window

Unfortunately, no. The software would have to be able to decipher a variety of coding styles. The onus is on the developer to code for the software. The rules are inhibiting visually and most dont want to provide alternative versions. It effectively doebkes the cost.
Coming soon to television and theaters: lawsuits. It’s not fair that some can’t see and some can’t hear and some can’t see or hear. This unfairness has to be fixed because life should be fair for everybody. Lawyers will save the day.
You’re a hoot!
“I like the signs at the drive up windows of banks saying they have instruction in braille for the blind.”
Considering some of the drivers around here it makes sense.
It should not be a problem, as long as she only accesses them at night.
I am a engineer.
thankfully drive up bank machines already have brail
Again, failure on the part of the software that is supposed to provide access and fails to. My phone can read printed words in real time from artistic signs on the street; why isn’t she suing her translation software which is unable to provide the service of a common smart phone these days?
Why doesn’t she sue her eyes for not working?
She’s blind, so how would she know?
She’s blind, so whay would she care about diamonds, or jewelry?
