The university gym does ESPN. I kept up with baseball for years because of it.
Ping to jimjohns #39. For discussion.I emphatically agree that weather and traffic are news. Actionable news. Ditto for ag commodity prices in ag areas. But actionable news is local news, almost by definition.
National/international news is not local, and therefore can be obtained locally only electronically - or with a huge lag. Enter the Associated Press, because of the huge expense of telegraphy bandwidth as of the Nineteenth Century heyday of growth in the AP. The Internet is a symptom of the fact that telegraphy bandwidth is now dirt cheap. And that means that the AP has lost the raison d'être. which made it too big to fail when it was found to be in violation of the Sherman AntiTrust Act in 1945.
National/international news is in general bad news. Which is the most famous news story - delirious celebration at the end of WWII, or the sinking of the Titanic? You could say that they are comparable, perhaps - but there are a lot more major disaster" stories in history than there are end of WWII stories. There is actually a facet of the branch of mathematics known as Chaos Theory which predicts that abrupt major changes in circumstance (i.e., news) are predominantly negative changes. Its simple, really - a house takes a while to build, but it can burn to the ground in an afternoon.
