I Have an Alternative to AA That’s Gotten Thousands off Drinking
New York Post ^ | January 4, 2018 | Lauren Steussy

Up until about three years ago, Annie Grace would end her stressful workdays as a vice president of a global marketing company with a glass of malbec, filled to the top, often the first of five in her daily ritual.

By the time she tucked her two children into bed and kissed her husband good night, her teeth were purple, her breath was thick with the smell of booze and, often, an empty box of wine would be in the trash of their Evergreen, Colo., home. Some weeks, she and her husband would plow through 12 boxes.

“I was not the mom I wanted to be,” Grace, now 39, tells The Post. “I wanted to be giving my family the best of me and I was giving them the absolute worst.”

So basically, I didn’t quit drinking, i just switched drinks ?
AA is not a self-help program.

Waking up next to the Hildabeast would do it for most.

AA is not about shame. I love AA. If I hadn’t qualified for it with my drinking, not sure where I’d be.

In case management-workers comp especially—the person/entity that pays gets to decide what addiction/abuse treatment they will write a check for, they let the case manager know and we see that it is implemented that way. Any group or program that does not utilize professionals is classified as a “self help” program-doesn’t matter if it is AA, NA, the program in the article or any of the other such programs/groups. That is just the way it is when a provider is paying for rehab-they demand professional monitoring and therapy, as well as provable results. If you are paying yourself, then do whatever works for you, of course...

If someone trades one addiction/obsession for another, that is a switch-not a cure. And I didn’t say that you did that-I have no idea what you did-only what I’ve observed in my professional and personal life. I made it clear that one size does not fit all-also-if you learned at AA or some other place a way to get my cousin to stop with the sugary, high fructose loaded soda that is his new addiction, please let me know-my whole family will thank you-we are afraid he will ruin all his organs with that stuff...

Adverse life experiences such as physical/emotional abuse may make some turn to alcohol and drug abuse (and smoking). These are just coping devices and without them they may suffer with unrelieved stress which can lead to other health problems.

There’s more to it than just a bad habit they picked up.

" Grace researched alcohol’s ill effects and journaled about why she was drinking in an effort to dismantle the assumptions that she had made about the substance — that it was calming her nerves or making her more interesting. In fact, she found, it didn’t do any of that."

This sounds parallel to Allen Carr's "The Easy Way to Stop Smoking"

You know you’re drinking cheap wine when the box has an expiration date. Seriously you can find some decent wines in boxes.

Just cannot get that juice box picture out of my mind.

I saw wine in a box in the first Grumpy Old Men movie.

I’d be grumpy too if I had to drink wine out of a (juice) box.

The first place I encountered wine in a box, was in Australia in 1975.

_______________

There is uncommonly fine Australian wine...in bottles...

I believe you.

I am still trying to wrap my head around the screw tops on some decent vintages. The Mad Dog 20/20 vision keeps cropping up.

all I can say is that I bet Donald Trump doesn’t drink his wine from an oversized juice box.

I ran 10 miles a day and drank 10 beers a day for almost 20 years. Loved every minute...till my knees gave out. Then realized the ten beers was to mask the pain of the knees ha! I cut back to 6 and swim a mile a day now.
