The Pacific Northwest Seismic Network says Wednesday the 3.9-magnitude and 2.1-magnitude temblors struck shortly after midnight near the volcanic peak. ... Residents reported feeling the largest earthquake as far away as Portland, Oregon -- about 70 miles to the south -- and in a large area of southwest Washington. ...
The seismic network outreach director, Bill Steele, says it's fairly typical to see earthquake swarms in this area, though somewhat unusual to have one with a 3.9 magnitude. ... He says even though the quakes have been located near Mount St. Helens, it's not caused by the magma underneath the volcano.

oh oh.
California, now Mount St Helens
Uh huh, sure, if you say so, right, must be something else, no need to PANIC!
In related news, there are offshore volcanoes active along the west coast (vocanic rock washing up onto oregon beach) and this realtime tremor map shows clumps of activity in the pacific northwest. The realtime tremors are too small to be earthquakes but show where there’s lots of little micro tremors opposite that “fracture zone” off the coast.

“it’s not caused by the magma underneath the volcano”
The magma may have not caused it, but what impact will the quake have on the magma?
The gods are angry and must be appeased. We need to start feeding leftists in to the volcano...
It’s probably caused by global warming...

Good question. I just dislike such a definitive opinion from anyone, even a genuine expert. Rising magma preceding an eruption typically causes strings of earth quakes. And they can also occur independent of any changes in the magma pool. But as far as I know it’s not possible to categorically rule out either as the cause when it happens around an active volcano (Geology wasn’t my college major but it was by far my favorite subject, so I tend to pay attention).
The webcams are down but they are frequently down in the winter
Hopefully, likely just Mother Nature adjusting her girdle.
