Yes, I know it does, but if you’re flying at FL190 and your oxygen system fails and you don’t realize it... Well, you’re pretty dead.

Most single engine aircraft don’t have an oxygen system and they don’t fly that high.

Great question. You should learn to fly! The decision to climb to 19,000’ for this trip will be questioned. There was no advantage in terms of flight time. It was an hour and a half long flight at both 9,000’ or 19,000’. Today, the wx was clear, so no issues there. So why did he choose 19,000’ instead of staying down below 10,000’ where is no risk of hypoxia? Short speculative answer is ego. He had a fire breathing hot rod airplane that could go that high, so by golly he’s gonna go that high. Ego has killed many many pilots. As one of my old commanders told me once, “It’s not BEING a fighter pilot that will kill you, it’s trying to ACT like a fighter pilot that kills you”. It comes down to risk v reward. In this case the pilot took on significant extra risk for no reward. People do it all the time and get away with it 99.9999% of the time. In this case, I would have leveled off at 9000’ and not bothered with Ox at all.

The greater the altitude the colder it gets.

I don’t know if that Aircraft has any Deicing System built into it.

From A/C Spec Info:

CERTIFIED FLIGHT INTO KNOWN ICE Increase your flying flexibility and capability with the Cirrus Known Ice Protection System. Not an STC or an afterthought, this TKS-based system was uniquely engineered to include innovative features such as dual windshield sprayers that ensure landing visibility, dual TKS fluid tanks with automatic tank switching and three TKS flow rate options to cover every condition. More impressive is the full integration with the Cirrus Perspective cockpit providing ready access to TKS fluid duration and range information and all System Operating Parameters. Finally, this package also guarantees your aircraft is ready for colder weather flying and maximized engine life with a Tanis Engine Pre-Heater. Weight Δ = 63 lbs

I don’t see that it has any Wing Deiceing System, looks like Windscreen only to Me. Payers done for All involved.

The tks deicing system is a whole plane system. Ice was not a factor in this accident. The weather was clear.

Yep, and another possibility....on autopilot combined with a cardiac event where the pilot doesn’t slouch on the controls or push the rudder pedals.

iirc it was a Cirrus 22 that the RE developer and with had the same experience about a year ago while on their way to Florida FLL. Military jets followed them until they arrived in Cuban airspace and then jets diverted. The plane continued and crashed off coast of Jamaica.

Even with “single engine” planes?????? How many of them fly high enough to be pressurized?

The Cirrus is not just any airplane. Think Cirrus to Cessana 152 as Tesla to Chevy Impala.

That Jamaica crash was a French built tbm 950. It’s a single engine turbo prop 6 place pressurized 300 knot super plane. They had a depressurization. The pilot on that one just didn’t come down fast enough to a safe altitude. He also didn’t put on the emergency ox mask? Aviation has a way of weeding out the non professionals.

Being above 10,000’ is not, in and of itself, debilitating and pilots do that all the time in pressurized aircraft.

In my T-37 we would routinely fly at FL25, breathing O2 through the mask.

Yes, it is called an altimeter. ;-)

Pilot should be scanning all outside and inside indicators.

Fighter jets can chase down all those pesky aircraft with props or jet engines.

Meant to say: “Pilots do that all the time in un-pressurized aircraft.”. . .as long as they have supplemental O2.

Large pic but I guess this is the pilot you’re referring to - if that’s the guy - pic is upside down
