At least 36 people have been killed after a coach plummeted 100m (330ft) down a cliff and landed upside down on a beach in Peru, officials say.

...The accident happened on a notorious stretch of road known as Curva del Diablo (the devil's bend) in Pasamayo, north of the capital Lima.

A transport official said the coach was carrying about 50 people.

...

Peru transport chief Dino Escudero said an investigation had been launched but it appeared that the coach had been in collision with another vehicle, causing the driver to lose control.

"...Dozens killed as coach plunges off cliff..."

It wasn’t so much the plunge that killed them as much as it was the sudden stop at the bottom.

Judging by the video post , I suspect that a lot of them were ejected on the way down.

There are probably 25,000 miles of cliff-roads in South America that most of us would never venture upon.

Ahh, the nostalgia of it all. Back in the day bus plunge stories were a staple of every newspaper.

Not funny. My son has a very dear friend who lives there. How about compassion for the dead?

Every few years a car would go off similar cliffs at the “Devil’s Slide” south of San Francisco. We were lucky a bus never went off the cliffs there.

Your son’s friend should completely avoid the Curva del Diablo while traveling in that region.
When countless people have died in a curve renown for extreme danger, one should not feel surprised if one finds themselves in a wreck in that same spot.

LOL. Communist? The story is apolitical. But if you own the decoder ring you can see that beneath the surface it harbors the steganography for Putin's own copy of Ilsa, The Tigress of Siberia [Wikipedia].

Roads like this are why I only drove around Stinson Beach one time, at the begging request of a friend. I was very uncomfortable the whole time, thinking ‘Never again. I don’t care who wants to see a special rock formation.

Tilden Park near Berkeley also has narrow, wrap around roads like this one, or at least they did 20 years ago.
Great vistas. Great risks, too.

My Father’s rather large family is in Peru. We’ve lost a few on that road. Haven’t been there in 50 years but I see that there are a few guardrails now.

My first take on the headline was that Andy Reid must have taken up cliff diving.
