Fieri actually has a degree in hotel management which is, in many respects, culinary school. Ina Garten is an excellent cook and Paula Deen, before she got carried away, was a really excellent baker. But, the snobs, exemplified by the odious Bourdain, will have none of them. But they have their followers - many straight men who have taken up cooking through some of the competition shows so beloved by the Food Network. I must say, I’m addicted to Chopped myself.
I do not like all those food shows that are on but my wife does. My one exception is Guy's show "Diners, Dives, and Drive-Ins" (I think that is the name). Guy is always pleasant and complimentary to the owners and workers in the places he showcases.
Chez Boots wafts into chopped language and phrases at restaurants
Oh, not enough acid in your salad? Did your steak lack seasoning? (Salt and pepper to the idiots in the audience!) Did the dish need something to “tie it all together”? Was that a raw red onion I just saw served on the plate!?
I can do Chop-talk in my sleep. Except when Alex G gets going with her increasingly bizarre metaphors.
No it isnt stellar but reading some of those reviews one gets the sense that some folks just wanted to put down a tv chef
True he is and some of those places are pretty darned good.
His Johnny Garlicks in California aint bad
Several years ago, my wife was given a three week assignment to be a restaurant reviewer and I was her guest. We were given instructions what to look for, what to ask and how to behave.
Every restaurant pinned us out and said so at the end of the meal. How did they know? We were too nice and didn’t act like we were owed something.
Supposedly still wildly popular with a major wait to get in... how does a business with lots of “business” go OUT of business???
Not of these snotty critics know little to nothing about food - and couldn’t cook their own way out of a microwave frozen TV dinner...
“Food critic” is the penultimate example of “those who can’t________”
The restaurant that is closing is not owned by him, the ow ers are licensing his name.
I remember the first time I saw Guy on the Food Network’s Next Star series, I couldn’t stand him, he seemed so fake.
I still can’t, he just seems like a make-believe TV host.
I like people like Alton Brown, I loved Good Eats and made many of his recipes, Alton is down to Earth, normal, caloused-hands Joe six-pack.
I hate to admit it, but I really like Anthony Bourdain, ever since his Kitchen Confidential book.
I know he’s a twit, hates Trump and didn’t treat his wife right, but his commentary was incisive, and some of his shows, like when he was in Lebanon and was evacuated by the US Army, were fantastic.
I haven’t watched any of his current CNN shows as I refuse to turn on CNN, but I always viewed Bourdain as there real deal.
Thanks for the info .
He’s kinda cheesy, but I was impressed to see he provided tons of meals to people during the CA fires. I think both to workers and civilians.
I do watch D D & D’s. I love seeing small restaurants in action & how they create signature dishes. Watching it makes me really hungry ; )
His Times Square place did sound pretty awful, but I give him credit for showcasing mom & pop places and bringing business their way. He is a hero for small restaurants.
Love that first gen Camaro he drives though.
No one went there, it was too crowded. Compliments to Mr. Bera.
I've been to a handful of the places he's covered on that show, and in every case, the place was terrific.
Once, when I was traveling, I wound up eating at the same place featured every day I was there.
Mark
He’s too alpha male for the fags at the NYT.
And he’s not over the top macho, basically a nice guy that has a good show and has turned lots of people on to lots of great places to eat.
After we got to AZ my wife took me to an evening with Ina Garten (she worked in the Reagan admin!). Anyway, in the Q&A people said they drove from CANADA and Minnesota to attend this event!
When my wife and I head back to my home state of Michigan this summer we'll be eating at a place he showcased earlier this year. It is less than a mile from the house in which I grew up. We'll also hit a place that he was at that is right next to my alma mater of Michigan State University.
