Computer help needed for Windows 10 - Where's Office?
Dec. 27, 2017 | vanity

Posted on 12/28/2017 12:42:05 PM PST by bgill

Unfortunately, I've had to get a new computer and it's an Acer Windows 10. Does it not have Windows Office? From searches, apparently Windows 10 doesn't come with everything previous systems (95, XP, Windows 7) did. All I can find is a 30 day trial and then purchase window which asks for a 25 number key number which I can't find anywhere in the 5 small pieces of paperwork that came in the box. And the key number looks to be for a 30 day trial. Do I have to buy Office? What else will I have to buy? Any other surprises? Thanks.

If you have a SmartPhone, you can buy AnyList for $8 and install it on the phone AND on your desktop PC. Make your grocery list, including pix and what store to buy each item from.

Take your phone to the store and you won’t need a printed list at all. As you put each item in your cart, double-click on it in AnyList and a red line appears that tells you that you have that item. When all items have red lines through them, yer done.

“Office was never free.”

In one way it was “free”. It used to come standard on all new PCs. That was back in the ‘90s — and maybe later. I think a company sued MS and they were ordered to stop.

“Wordpad” is a free word processing program which has come with every version of Windows.

MS Office has NEVER come free with any version of Windows. If you got it on some machine which you bought then it was part of the package deal.

Good luck on that. W7 went end of life over a year ago.

I am new on 10 also... and do not like it... but knew that already and it wasn’t as bad as I thought. You search with “This PC” and then C drive and search in the search window, upper right. I spent an hour trying to find the control panel today... it’s there but hard to find if it’s not already in the start... and even “start” is hard to figure out. nothing is handy...

I have used office for years and not bought it. installed it with the exe file and it worked ok.. I think microsoft is fixing it so it won’t work that way now. I save it on a stick or hand hard drive and then install it on the new computer.. it did not work this time with windows 10.

I do not like the new office outlook... they added a lot of bells and whistles that I don’t want and can’t remove them.. it is not user friendly.. it’s microsoft fixed.

Oh, it's out here for those who take the red pill (Linux).

Get Office 365. It’s like 60 bucks a year and gets the newest updates.

I use Libre Office. https://www.libreoffice.org/ Almost the same as Open Office, since it’s based on that.

I hear you. I don’t like Win10 either. It really is a piece of crapware written for tablets and not PCs. About every 6 months my system is unstable for 2 days after they push an upgrade. The upgrades also want to remove the free versions of any software you have and replace them with MS versions that you must pay for. It is pain to reinstall the free versions and besides that you lose any data in the cache for the free apps.

If you download and run Belarc Advisor (free version: https://www.belarc.com/products_belarc_advisor), it will tell you a lot about your hardware and software installation, including licenses.

Notepad and Wordpad that comes with Win10 may be all you need for jotting notes. I still use Office 2007 and 2003 which installed on Win10 and seem to run OK. I kept the link to Office365 on the system in case the day comes when they stop working.

If for no other reason, I’ll avoid Windows 10 like the plague ever since it was covertly installed on my machine WITHOUT AUTHORIZATION. Such a slimy company.

Possible yes, but usually beyond the technical skills of the average Windows users. I find very few windows users understand the concepts of master boot record, partitions and boot loaders which are necessary to create and manage a dual boot system.

Either way, backing up before a major change is always a good idea.

Office is usually a separate application, unless you buy it bundled with your computer. You should still have Notepad for basic typing/printing.

“Good luck on that. W7 went end of life over a year ago.”

Not exactly true. It depends on the version as to when it no longer is supported and whether you are referring to free or paid support. In fact we still have XP Enterprise on systems that is fully supported.

Take a look at MoneyDance (http://moneydance.com/) if you are using quickbooks for personal finance.

If for a small business, take a look at GNUCash. If for an accounting business where you do the books for others, try SQL Ledger. All have Linux versions that run well for their intended purpose.

beyond the technical skills of the average Windows users??

That in and of itself is a pretty sad statement, unfortunately I have to agree with you.

generally speaking if you are capable of tying your own shoes, installing linux as a dual boot system should be No problem. Just follow the instructions. It gives you that option during setup.

Yep, it’s all about Gates. I’ve hollered a few things about him these past few days.

Thanks. I’ve downloaded Open Office and will have to play with it and try to get the printer going.

One would have thought the computer would notice the new hardware for the printer but it didn’t. Have no idea where the old printer set up disc is. Blah.

Not 100%. HP and Dell are selling many new Win 7 systems through their business sites. I know MS plans to end support for it in a couple years, but they’re still being sold. The one I have have picked out is a 1T / 8gb / i7 system.
