Computer help needed for Windows 10 - Where's Office?
Dec. 27, 2017 | vanity

Posted on 12/28/2017 12:42:05 PM PST by bgill

Unfortunately, I've had to get a new computer and it's an Acer Windows 10. Does it not have Windows Office? From searches, apparently Windows 10 doesn't come with everything previous systems (95, XP, Windows 7) did. All I can find is a 30 day trial and then purchase window which asks for a 25 number key number which I can't find anywhere in the 5 small pieces of paperwork that came in the box. And the key number looks to be for a 30 day trial. Do I have to buy Office? What else will I have to buy? Any other surprises? Thanks.

Well, I’ve been using W10 at work for a few months and don’t like it either. A tablet GUI for a desktop doesn’t cut it. There are some skins you can dl or purchase which will give it more of a W7 arraingement.

Oh, and if you read the EULA you’d see it’s all your fault you can’t use it.

Consider downloading the live version of Linux Mint 18
https://linuxmint.com/download.php

I recommend the Cinnamon desktop version - 64 bit if your machine is capable of 64bit option. Burn it to a DVD and then boot your machine from the DVD. This will allow you to try the OS before you install it. If you like it, there is an install option on the Linux Mint live dvd desktop.

Caution, it will wipe out your existing windows install. So back up your data and make sure you have the windows 10 product license written down before you install Mint - just in case you want to restore back to windows.

Try this for a better user interface than W10.

Windows 10 is just fine and NBD. Get OpenOffice (free) and you’re good to go.

I think he means the Cortana search box. which you should be able to see from the “metro/charm” view.

If not, go to “desktop”
then you should see the “type here to search” box
type in:

wordpad

hit the enter key. (or select the “wordpad app” that shows up in the search suggestions.

If you are able to disable secure boot in cmos, I would do that and Load Linux Mint, all the stuff you need is FREE and installed already. Not to mention it is way faster and better than winblows.

If I could get Quickbooks Pro to work in Linux, I would NEVER USE WINDOWS!!!

If he does it right, he will have dual boot instead of total erasure.

"Open Office is free and it’s excellent.

My only complaint with it is that it doesn’t save to the .docx format.
"

LibreOffice 5 does in Linux. I just checked with a "save as." Is LibreOffice 5 available for Windows? LibreOffice was a fork from OpenOffice years ago, if I remember correctly.

Windows 10 is great, best. Microsoft Office 365 is best solution for those apps. Get personal for $99 a year for 5 (?) computers.

Ah, so that’s why there’s a Windows “Store” predominantly displayed on the desktop. Just unpinned it.

“Most of the time, you have to purchase MS Office separately”

“Purchase” isn’t the right word any more, I guess. When we bought our two Windows 10 Envys, we got Office 360. Every year on a certain date, you must renew and pay for the next year. If you don’t, the Office Suite stops. You and your files are held hostage until you fork over the money. So I guess we don’t technically “own” Office. Our deadline for the next year is coming up.

Thank heaven my Office 2003 Professional disks still are loading into the Windows 10 laptop. I’ll order a new Windows 7 laptop next week because Windows 10 SUX. The Explorer File Manager in Win 10 is just dreadful!
