NFL looking at game plan to recover from record-low TV ratings
Washington Times ^ | December 24, 2017 | Jeff Mordock

The NFL is approaching the playoffs looking for a ratings turnaround after a year of record-low television numbers. Outcry over players protesting by taking a knee during the national anthem isn’t helping, but it’s only one of several reasons fans are turning away from professional football, media analysts say.

Anyone rembember the 1994 MLB strike? i haven’t watched a MLB game since.

Yeah, super World Series ... oh, wait.

While I can't say I quit watching all games since, I can say that 99% of the games I have watched were Yankee games.

And my lack of giving-a-$hit about baseball (and football) in general can be traced back to the overabundance of mediocare players getting paid millions - and billionaire owners getting new stadiums paid for by tax payers.

All of the “other” factors they are talking about have existed for years.

What is different about this year?

The thing that scares him is that all the other problems can be solved. There is no way they can un-ring the bell on these unpatriotic protests.

When people see the Red White and Blue NFL Shield, they know it is a lie. You can not hide that fact with giant flags, fly-bys and marching bands. The NFL is not a patriotic organization.

This should have always been obvious, but fans blinded themselves to the obvious. They are blind no more.

A game plan to recover... I could tell you what you'd need, but I charge $250/hour to tell you, plus I'd a 787 to fly to NY...

My services don't come cheap....

Idiots didn’t learn anything from the ramifications of the baseball player strikes in the 70s. Took decades for ratings to come back. Still know people who were avid fans back then and still won’t bother to watch an MLB game. (Yeah, I’m old. Lol). Welcome to the club you NFL idiots.

You screwed yourself so bad, I won’t be watching the Super bowl.

Your future players will have you to thank for reduced earnings....

I agree. The concussion issue will drive sensible people to change the game so much it will be a poor competitor for other entertainment dollars. Because, after all, isn’t the big draw the licensed thug violence?

Your all-LA Super Bowl needs to be played at StubHub Center in Carson to really make it an over the top event.

Lockhart has done a great job communicating the NFL message—”f___you deplorable fans—we can make it without you”.

Message received!

““I see it stabilizing,” he said. “In 10 years from now, it will survive the ratings issue and adjust to a new level of normal and their new normal is rosier than any other sport.””

I really don’t see how, given that 10 more years of cord-cutting will have finished them off, both in terms of massively reduced eyeballs and generations of younger people who don’t give a crap about NFL football ...

In light of the above unalterable and accelerating systemic trends, the NFL made an EXTREMELY bad decision at a pivotal point in their survival to kowtow to their anti-American kneeler employees and thereby alienate their already rapidly diminishing die-hard fans ... And to top it off, they lavished vast rewards on the guy to lead them to this, Roger Goodell!

Looks like too many of the owners are old fools still living in the bubbles of their ancient past, or their clueless, idiotic children who’ve inherited the reins.

It doesn’t make any difference if they fire Goddell. He’s an owner, and all they can do is force him sell his team to someone, probably for a profit, so they can hire Kaepernick and we’re right back where we started.

“It is a boring game”

that’s actually now the biggest problem. the loser teams, which is pretty much all of them now excepting a very few elite teams, all have the same strategy: play only to avoid mistakes and hope the other team makes more mistakes than you do before the clock expires. This leads to nothing but short runs between the tackles and minimal passing.

Since they are bad teams to start with, that most likely means their offense lines suck and running isn’t going to work, so there end up being more punts than first downs.

Add in tons of penalties due to lack of discipline plus lengthy reviews and challenges, even pre-recording and skipping everything but the 11 minutes of actually play is mind-numbingly boring.

The NFL is actually better positioned to survive cord-cutting because 90% of their games are still broadcast on over-the-air TV.

Baseball on the other hand is over 90% cable. Just sayin’.

Football’s decline is due to in-your-face SJW activities and not cord-cutting.

Take it a step further: identify the fact, and it is a fact, that everyone in the country with a brain is aware of a racial problem here and that their protest has done nothing to change that, (it even has created groups of people that are expanding it like BLM) make any suggestions to help it other than point fingers, or contact anyone that can do something legitimate to change it. And as long as this behavior continues, they are their own worst enemy with nothing in sight to help.
