My mother must have had lucid dementia, then.
She knew damned well her bulb was burning out.

Till you said that, I didn't realize it's been that long.

My first thought as well.
Could no one have picked him up at his home?
However, some older folks who are still ‘mostly’ independent can be VERY stubborn about changing their routine or worse, admitting that they may need help from somebody younger.
“Either I drive there myself as I have done every year since 1951, or you know what? I ain’t going at all! So which is it gonna be?”

I just watched Remember, in which an Auschwitz survivor with dementia is convinced to undertake a mission to kill the SS Blockführer who murdered his family at the camp. The convincer is a physically incapacitated but mentally sound former Auschwitz prisoner who realizes that the one with dementia was actually also an SS Blockführer but has forgotten and thinks he's a Jew (an ultimate case of Waldheimer's disease, I suppose).

Some years back an old guy was following his Son in Laguna Hills, CA.

They were on Moulton Parkway and the Son looked back and didn’t see his Father’s Cadillac.

About six hours later they found the old guy on the side of Highway 40 near Needles, CA. He was sitting in his Car that had run out of Gas. I think the right blinker was still on.

When you age you lose the sense of thirst. Many elderly are walking around in a permanent state of dehydration. It thickens the blood and can cause dementia-like symptoms as circulation to the brain decreases.

Then it becomes a self perpetuating cycle of not having enough brain function to realize that just because you’re not thirsty, you can’t skip out on 50oz of fluids a day to spare yourself the Depends.

What the hell kind of family does he have who’d let that elderly man be on his own to find his way?

In some states it’s legal to drive with diagnosed early stage dementia. And getting a license taken away from an afflicted and impaired family member who refuses to give up driving can be a difficult and painful road, and that’s if the family isn’t in denial or refuses to get involved.

Thank God. I hope someone intervenes to ensure this gentleman isn’t allowed behind the wheel again. And that if he requires additional assitance, whatever it is, he gets it.

According to the BMV in Ohio insurance is mandatory:

Mandatory Insurance

In Ohio, it is illegal to drive any motor vehicle without insurance, and it is illegal for a vehicle owner to allow anyone else to drive his or her motor vehicle without insurance.

Real “loving family”, allowing a 97 year old man with dementia to drive alone.

Thank goodness he was found safe and sound. Maybe he was the designated driver for the 100 year olds. :)
