a whole movie from a single scene- brilliant- one of the best movies going in my opinion- amazing that one account triggered the whole story
Darren McGavin makes the movie, it wouldn’t have been the same with anyone else.
Great movie, unsanitized by PC. Probably wouldn’t be made today.
That live version they put on Fox last weekend was sickening. As someone else said, “I want to shoot my eyes out”. I bailed after about 5 minutes.
Listened to Shep regularly on WOR-770 in NYC growing up.
I worked at WOR in the 70s but not for Jean Shepard. A friend of mine was his engineer and friend. He and his wife loved him. I never heard a word against him - and he was no has-been. His radio show was wonderfully popular but it was a different time - most radio was local, not national. Of course, A Christmas Story has simply solidified his place in culture. He’s in the movie; I just saw it last night in its nice blu-ray edition.
My son just confirmed that the story he heard about the kid with the goggles is true.
The film was so low budget, they shot the store scene in a real store at night.
They had some people just come in to be shoppers and fill out the crowd. Then they saw the kid with the goggles. The director put him in the scene. He didn’t even tell him what to say. He just saw this weird kid.
The kids lines weren’t scripted, so Ralphie’s reaction was pure.
I love this movie, especially the scene where Aunt Clara sends him pink bunny jammies for Christmas. Reminds me of the types of gifts I used to get from my grandma, whom I had rarely seen and she didn’t know any of us kids very well. Yeah, I know, it’s the thought that counts...
Naddafinga!
I literally did look through Playboy for the Shep stories.
We saw it for the first time when a six year old with us said, about the scene meeting the bully in the raccoon hat, thats from Peter and the Wolf
What is?
The music
The bullys theme song is Peter and he Wolf. Brilliant A movie about cheesiness using Classic Russian to delineate the bully

I let it loop at my house on Christmas day
Bob Clark, from Wikipedia. Lest we forget.
Clark and his son, Ariel Hanrath-Clark, 22, were killed in a head-on car crash on the Pacific Coast Highway in Pacific Palisades, Los Angeles on the morning of April 4, 2007.[11] The crash occurred when an SUV driven by an illegal alien crossed the median and struck Clark’s Infiniti I30, causing the closure of the highway for eight hours.[6] Police determined that the SUV’s driver, Hector Velazquez-Nava, had a blood alcohol level of three times the legal limit and was driving without a license.[12] He initially pleaded not guilty to two counts of gross vehicular manslaughter,[13] but changed his plea to no contest in August. On October 12, 2007, Velasquez-Nava was sentenced to six years in prison under the terms of a plea agreement.[14] Valazquez-Nava was deported and re-entered under a different name and is currently living in Los Angeles illegally.[15]
“Naddafinga!”
“SUMSABISHES!!! BUMPUSES!!!”
Nobody but Darren McGavin. Nobody.
I grew up at the same time as the Christmas Story is set in. Ralphie could have been me. I went to a school that looked just like his and witnessed a triple dog dare on the iron maypole that froze someone’s tongue.
Our dogs got into our turkey and ate into them to the point where we had none for Christimas dinner. There were no Chinese restaurrants nearby and we had no money for a large family to eat there anyway so our dinner was vegetarian with a triple saucing of laughter.
I love the movie and made my kids watch it with me every year. Still do. Merry Christmas to all Freepers.
Here’s Shep reading from his book, the source for the Christmas Story.
