A man racked up a big bill at an Albuquerque Chipotle location, but he wasn't buying food.
Jarvis Canuto is behind bars after police say he broke into the restaurant on Central Avenue near UNM Monday night, causing damage and panic. The incident could cost $10,000 to clean up.
According to a criminal complaint, Canuto went into the Chipotle armed with brass knuckles and waving around a knife. Police say he shattered the front glass door, cutting up his hand in the process. It was the only injury.
Police arrest man after bizarre restaurant burglary Patrick Rushing is the general manager at a Jersey Mike's located two doors down. He said Canuto came into their shop minutes before with a strange request.
"I said, 'What's going on? I'm sorry. We can't serve you. You don't have a shirt on," Rushing said. "And then he said, 'I'm going to rob you if you don't call the cops,' so that's when I picked up the phone and dialed 911."
Surveillance video Canuto punches their glass door too, but it holds.
Officers say when they got to Chipotle, Canuto was alone in the restaurant, pacing around, contaminating the dining room with blood, and drinking alcohol. He allegedly responded to an officer's commands to come out with his hands up by giving them the finger.
The criminal complaint states Canuto eventually threw a fire extinguisher through another door, which sent glass flying in the officer's direction. Investigators say officers were able to get him under control and in custody, but the damage was already done.
Along with replacing the broken glass, Chipotle has to get rid of anything with blood on it to comply with health codes, throw away and restock all the food, then sanitize the entire restaurant inside and out.
"I'm just glad nobody got hurt," Rushing said.
The Chipotle has shut down. There's no word yet on when it will reopen, but a sign posted there says it will be as soon as possible.
Canuto faces multiple charges including aggravated burglary, tampering with evidence, and criminal damage to property.
