Carolina Panthers owner Jerry Richardson will be selling the team after allegations of workplace misconduct forced the team to start an internal investigation on Friday.
Richardson announced his intention to sell the team in a letter on Sunday night after the Panthers win over the Green Bay Packers:
Specific allegations against Richardson surfaced in a report from Sports Illustrated on Sunday afternoon just as early NFL games were kicking off.
Among the allegations in the report are sexually inappropriate comments directed at female employees:
Among those in heaviest rotation: Show me how you wiggle to get those jeans up. I bet you had to lay down on your bed to fit into those jeans. Did you step into those jeans or did you have to jump into them? There was also allegedly a racial slur directed at a former team scout:
Perceptions of casual racism hardened recently when, multiple sources told SI, Richardson directed a racial slur at an African-American scout for the Panthers. The scout left the team this yearbut not, according to sources, before he sought the counsel of a Charlotte attorney who negotiated a confidential settlement on his behalf. Contacted by SI and asked if he wished to comment, the scout responded, Im not in a position to talk. Players were not previously made aware that Richardson would be selling the team:
The news of the investigation was first broken by ESPNs Jim Trotter, who had a statement from coach Ron Rivera.
I have had a strong relationship with Mr. Richardson during my time with the Panthers, Rivera told ESPN. I have enormous respect for the man, but will wait for the results of the investigation before making any judgment.

Besides that, he wants to get rid of it before ownership of a professional football team becomes an even bigger money pit that will ensure the majority of team owners come up financial losers.
This isn't covered in Physics class anymore?
...can’t wait till they get to the remarks the players make to the cheerleaders....*smiles*
Every smart owner can see the beginning of the end of the NFL as a money-maker.
He was one of the few sane owners in the league. Now some progressive corportist will buy the team and deal another blow to an American institution.
Panthers news.
Good.
And hopefully the new owner will move the team to Waco.
Uh Oh, that can’t be good for Jerry Jones.
Time for a fire sale
NFL needs to contract at least 10 teams to get some decent quality back.
Hey NFL franchise owner: SELL
“NFL needs to contract at least 10 teams to get some decent quality back.”
You mean Waco ain’t getting an NFL team?
Like the time the LA Clippers sold for $2B to Steve Balmer? Donald Sterling’s estate thanks those who stirred the controversy to provide him with a likely $700-800M premium over what the team was valued at before the brouhaha.
This guy may be in the Sterling position, in fact he should release some additional incriminating remarks to help drive of the value of the sale.
This isn't LA or basketball. Football is in a big slump, and it will take a big ego to pay big bucks.
His being one of the few sane owners was probably why he was targeted.
The insanity will continue as long as “hostile work environment” lawsuits make money for lawyers and plaintiffs.
We need to get federal laws like that out of the workplace. Your boss is too crass for you? Tough. Quit and find a job you like better, like the rest of us had to do.
Seriously, these comments are going to force the sale of a billion dollar franchise? Hope the women enjoyed their time in the workplace cause it's going to come to a screeching halt soon. In the very near future women won't get a job anywhere near a man with a career or a business.
