Last night, The Last Jedi scored $45 million in preview shows around the US. Thats the second highest Thursday preview opening ever, behind The Force Awakens, so thats good news.
But the WTH news is that The Force Awakens did $57 million on its Thursday previews two years ago. In between there was Rogue One with a $29 million preview Thursday last year.
So what the heck? Is there Star Wars burn out with movies three years in a row? Could be.

Totally agree that stupid casino planet was presented as an attack on the 1% as well as an anti war message even against the resistance. Btw was that blonde general meant to be Trump? There was a don’t fight, listen to the women and run away message throughout.
Love your post! Just saw Die Hard, the essential Christmas film, at an Alamo Drafthouse Movie Party. As a devoted Alan Rickman fan, it isnt Christmas without Hans baby!
I saw the first Star Wars (VHS version) and I saw this one. A realtor friend bought out the theater for the night and invited friends/clients so my wife and I went. I didn’t understand the fascination with the original and, after seeing this one, I still don’t.
Just a stupid movie where the point seems to be blowing stuff up and showing off the talents of the graphics people. But I don’t care for movies to begin with so you can take what I say with a giant block of salt.
The original SW was a fun B-movie with some heart. The next two represented a series that was maturing along with the taste and expectations of the audience back then.
These new ones look visually stunning and all, but I’m left without that sense of fun and accessibility. The story is too complex and dark. Far too many characters to keep track of, with too many “issues” as well. I feel as out of place watching it as R2 and CP-30 look in it.
I just hope jar jar binks makes a come back and saves the day.
I tried watching the predecessor movie to this latest release just recently. It had no discernible plot, and the main character was a woman (Daisy Ridley) of mediocre acting talent, dressing in what appeared to be dirty rags made into a costume. It had no discernible plot, and was of course special effects heavy. The action scenes seemed to be taken right out of first person shooter games in which the good guys all get 10 ring shots on the bad guys, over and over. Unwatchable junk.
‘in an emasculated universe a long long time ago...’
The last one I saw was all flash and bang. Sorry, but my head refuses to sit through 1.5 hours of noise and bomb bursts.
It wasn’t the scifi elements that made SW completely successful...it was Han, Leia and Luke. There was a lot of good humor and fun in the original film, too. Just great fun and escapism.
I saw some of that in the last 2 movies. Can you give me an example of it from this latest one?
Thanks.
I know it was fun but it was also retarded.
Anything that pretends to show us advanced civilizations on other planets wearing Roman Spartan helmets but equipped with laser rifles just doesn’t cut the mustard in my book.
We occasionally hit the theater for some entertainment (combine it with a dinner and it’s a date....) - always sneak our own bottled water and candy in though.....not to mention a “means of self defense”....
Agreed...but just sheer dumb fun was the point...the characters were fun, too. It wasn’t really even scifi...science fantasy, perhaps. Not anymore, though. Star Wars is now being treated like a drama...and much more stupid than the sweet little original.

Bingo! It was a buddy film - a series of buddies: R2D2 and C3PO (Laurel and Hardy as droids), Luke and Biggs (mostly on the cutting room floor), Luke and Kenobi, Han and Chewie, all of them together with Leia.
In the new film, the two RETURNING characters who spent the most time together were enemies (Rey and Ben Solo/Kylo Ren).
It makes no sense.
Yep, and by the end of the first film the three buddies were Han, Leia, and Luke...we thought they were to be cinematic buddies forever. I remember hating Han’s line in Force Awakens when Rey asks about Luke. Han says, “Yeah, I knew Luke.” Sort of like a casual acquaintance, when the two were best friends and relatives through marriage.
Same here. Im on call this weekend and will probably see it with my son next weekend
It’s the second of a trilogy. Urgent interest wanes when you already know how it started and won’t find out how it ends until years later.
Yeah, I agree.
I bought the first Star Wars (now called Part 4, A New Hope) on Bluray a few weeks ago and started watching it.
Lucas ruined it with the silly superimposed CGI and the ridiculous edits (Jaba appearing to collect his dough) to horseshoe this film as an installment of a series. Frankly, it makes it hard to watch.
I would like to have a Bluray of the original as shown in theaters in 1977.
