Last night, The Last Jedi scored $45 million in preview shows around the US. Thats the second highest Thursday preview opening ever, behind The Force Awakens, so thats good news.
But the WTH news is that The Force Awakens did $57 million on its Thursday previews two years ago. In between there was Rogue One with a $29 million preview Thursday last year.
So what the heck? Is there Star Wars burn out with movies three years in a row? Could be.

Star Wars Burn Out? Last Jedi Thursday Night Box Office Falls Short of Force Awakens by $12 Million
I am part of the no shows on any more Star Wars movies. Yes I know, as others point out, domestically and internationally, these movies will keep making huge profits. Just not with my money.
Oh well, it will make a ton of money, and even though this felt like the end of the franchise; they can still make a bunch more spin-off’s like “Rogue One” if they think the market is there for it.
These movies are for all ages but I think it’s the kids who get the most out of them and there’s always a new generation to show them to.
I’m out of town this week so my boys are waiting ‘til I get home so that we can all go together. They might not get our money first night, but they will before it leaves the IMAX theater.
At the end of the third episode (Return of the Jedi, 1983), I thought the whole series should have ended. Then came the Phantom Menace (1999, 16 years later). The story didn’t work. Same for Attack of the Clones (2002) and Revenge of the Sith (2005). You would have thought that then....the production folks would realize that viewers weren’t coming in the same waves as in the late 70s or early 80s.
I actually went to number 7....the Force Awakens (2015) and wasted $10 on it. The soap opera-like science fiction story is a marginal two-star story, and the only big deal is the graphics.
It wasn’t bad. Enjoyable action and some heart-strings from earlier films.
...but the lighting was dark in most shots so you were looking at shadows moving instead of actors in many takes.
No desire to give money to SJW wars. Yes they give it in incremental doses to avoid backlash but plenty of behind the scenes and interviews the crew and directors make no bones about using the new movies as a vehicle for feminism and social justice. Of course even a few so called conservatives here don’t care because they are hypnotized by the Star Wars name like the rest of the masses.
Thanks. That is where I was going with this.
Agree. They can take their leftie manure and jump into the monster’s mouth that ate Jabba the Hutt.
Star Wars is Hans, Luke, Leia et al. Whatever followed is SWINO.
This movie is terrible leftist PC garbage. It literally goes to the 1% selling weapons to both sides trope. It’s not about good and evil, it is about the Rich using war is a tool to make money. So bad.
Han.
Right ON!!!
I saw the first Star Wars in, what was it, 1977? I thought to myself, no true “Science Fiction” movie (which it is not) can have a dog (”Wookie”?) flying a spaceship or have explosions with sound in the vacuum of space. The film was hit and I do not know why. I enjoyed Mel Brooks’ “Space Balls” better.
The films are dumb fantasy epics that have no real originality (sorry SW fans).
Even the original Star Trek was better than all the sequel spin offs.
In the old Star Trek, there was imagination, history, fantasy, science and Astronomy.
In all the recent Star Treks there are beings who all seem to have crumpled foreheads and leopard spots. That’s about it. They all have humanoid form which I guess fits into the budgets.
The last Star Wars movie I watched was Return of the Jedi. Don’t think I’ve missed much in the intervening 34 years.
#7 was 'Nazi Empire' without any understanding of what makes Nazi's possible. That whole movie felt like an artifical limb rather than a sequel. #8 was much better. If I keep seeing reports that #9 is leftist drivel I'l just skip it.
All that was inserted into the movie will in some way be marketed by the Disney theme parks, in the new immersive Star Wars resort and the land.
They are building a resort where you dress up in the garb, you interact with themed characters and you buy the merchandise, wait for the non stop advertising on FOX.
So typical, but I’m boycotting it because Disney is full of pervs, not because of an SJW message which will be lost on most of the audience, anyhow.
#BoycottHollywood
Last one i saw was number 4....childish super drivel with state of the art cgi. It’s dead Jim. They jumped the shark a long time ago in a galaxy far away. Great for babysitting mindless children. An electric mobile.
Agree 100% and the anti white male feminism was pretty much out in the open in this movie. Really turned me off.
