I posted a similar thread about more modern films, and while I've seen almost all of them, virtually every response so far is "little" or "none". I thought it might be interesting to contrast a similar list from the Golden Age of Hollywood. Here it is:
1. The Ten Commandments
2. Lady and the Tramp
3. Peter Pan
4. Cinderella
5. Ben-Hur
6. Sleeping Beauty
7. The Bridge on the River Kwai
8. Around the World in 80 Days
9. Rear Window
10. The Greast Show on Earth
11. The Robe
12. Giant
13. From Here to Eternity
14. White Christmas
15. 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea
16. Sayonara
17. Demetrias and the Gladiators
18. Peyton Place
19. Some Like it Hot
20. Quo Vadis
All but # 20.
Some of my favorite films of the 1950s
1. The Girl Cant Help It
2. Big Jim McClain
3. Pick-up On South Street
4. Here Comes the Groom
5. The Seven Samurai
6. Around the World in 80 Days
7. Oklahoma!
8. Land of the Pharaohs
9. Wabash Avenue
10. Invasion, USA
I can tell you the name of the girl I took to see “The D. I.” and the name of the restaurant that we had dinner, as well as the issue of the recruit’s reaction to Parris Island’s sand fleas. It was a beautiful summer day/evening, one to remember and cherish. Actually, thinking back on it, it’s too bad I didn’t pursue a deeper relationship with Phyllis. Her father recommended that I enter Syracuse University (which I did), and she also matriculated there while I was still a student. Doggone!
I seen them ALL!!!
All 20, and most of them numerous times.
Heston is all over that list.
Who can remember that far back.....
Wow! I’ve seen them ALL, some more than two three times (like 10 Commandments, Ben Hur, Lady and the Tramp)
The Robe as a movie was not that great, but I LOVE the book and read it at least 3 times.
Seen them all except Peyton Place and Sayonara.
Sorry to say I missed that one. Sounds good.
I’ve seen 18 of them.
I liked the book too.
Seen them. Great movies! Now think how MODERN movie makers could butcher them to make them “better”. I can’t.
20 of 20
Check it out!
To me, Kim was the sweetest spot in the movies of the fifties
and I fell in love with her. It amazes me that your list has not one of her 1950s movies:
o "Picnic" 1955
o "The Man With The Golden Arm" 1955 with Frank Sinatra
o "Eddy Duchin" 1956 with Tyrone Power
o "Pal Joey" 1957 with Frank Sinatra
o "Vertigo" 1958 with James Stewart
and others with A-class stars Frederic March and Kirk Douglas and others.
She was also smart enough to leave H'wood while her star was still bright, and is still pursuing her first love, painting and people, at 84:
-------
(BTW, I've seen all the movies on your list, though a few as later TV re-runs; So where is a real thriller
1955 with Spencer Tracy!!?? Huh?
But thanks for the basic list!
I don’t know about Demetrius (Was that Steve ???)
I saw all the rest...
I don’t know about Demetrius (Was that Steve ???)
