A 20-Year-Old Arizona Woman Died From The Flu [pneumonia] One Day After Getting Diagnosed

Murrieta began feeling sick last Sunday, and was sent home from her job at a warehouse to get some rest.

...

"My daughter called and said that Joie was sent home early on Sunday after working a few hours at the warehouse because she was really sick, and that she went home to rest," Gonzales said.

On Monday, her sister took her to an urgent care clinic, where they diagnosed Murrieta with the flu and sent her home with medicine.

"They got there in the morning and waited for a while, then they told her she had the flu and gave her a prescription for the medicine Tamiflu," Gonzales said.

Tamiflu is an antiviral medication used to treat and prevent infection with influenza A and B viruses. It is most effective when taken within 48 hours of contracting the flu.

...

"She was very healthy and never got sick, she worked six days a week and her job was at a warehouse so she was very active at her job," said Gonzales. Murrieta was seemingly not at a higher risk for hospitalization or death from the flu...

... Murrieta did not get a flu shot, Gonzales said, but her doctors said that there is no way to tell now whether that would've made a difference.

Murrieta leaves behind her two sons, one two-year-old and one six-month-old. "She would do anything for her sons — and it breaks my heart that the little one, who's only six months, will grow up without her," Gonzales said. "She was just a beautiful person — and we want to express our gratitude for everyone who has shown support for our family."

My wife and I both have been sick with flu for over a week. Neither of us get sick so this has been a bad experience for both of us. We are in the SE part of the country.

Wow...so hard to believe in this day and age, isn’t it?

I just got my first pneumonia shot ever after turning 66. I asked my Doc “Is this really necessary? and he said “I recommend it if you want to live. Pneumonia kills.” I thought he was exaggerating, but got the shot anyway. I’ve just gotten over a bad cold and will go get my flu shot tomorrow morning.

So sorry for this family and especially for her two young sons who will never know their Mom.

So very tragic. This year’s flu may be one that affects the young and healthy. They say the flu shot is worthless this year.

Two years ago this month, my husband’s cousin’s daughter, a very healthy 26 year old, died from the flu. With some strains of influenza (e.g., the Spanish flu of 1916 and the more recent “bird flu”, those with the healthiest immune systems are most affected. A cytokine storm occurs - essentially your immune system goes into overdrive and overwhelms your organs.

The Spanish flu epidemic killed more people than WWI.

absolute tragedy - senseless death of a beautiful young woman - clinic should have x-rayed her lungs - she died of pneumonia, not the flu.

Do we know what kind of warehouse she worked in ,that might give us some clues to her illness?

“””””A cytokine storm occurs - essentially your immune system goes into overdrive and overwhelms your organs.”””””

My 34 year old son just spent 67 days in the hospital with those symptoms. It started out as a simple pneumonia. He is at home now trying to regain his ability to walk. Lots of physical therapy.

Who says the flu shot is worthless? Do you have a source.

That was the 1918 H1N1 flu strain and indeed, mortality was highest in the 20-29 YO age category. This strain induced the overly aggressive cytokine storm that attacks, not just the flu but the victims own tissues. This single case does not yet confirm this is the same strain or a related subtype.

Very sad. My guess is that she was vitamin d deficient. Nutritional deficiencies probably make up the worst cases of anything contagious. Prayers for her family. Too sad.

The information in the story stated it wasn’t the flu she died from, it was pneumonia. The last three or four paragraphs read like a CDC press release for flu shots.

How is her death senseless. 36,000 people in the the US die of flu every year. Flu has a significant mortality rate and people should get the vaccine annually.
