Researchers at CanCog Technologies, a private institution in Toronto that studies behavior and aging in companion animals, have tested dogs and cats on the same tasks, using cats that show the same level of interest in food rewards as the dogs. They found that cats make more errors than dogs and require more trials to learn the same tasks.

That dog was also apt to eat any of their sandwiches that they left down low on the coffee table, etc. When my son was about six years old I gave him a roll for a snack. It was the last roll. He was standing in the Family Room smiling at me in gratitude when our dog, now sadly departed, walked by, and without slowing down or changing stride turned her head and cleanly snatched that roll right out of my son's hand. Not to be mean but the look on my son's face was priceless and I couldn't stop laughing.

Absolutely wonderful! Now THAT’S what I call a smart dog! Actually it is our male cat. The only time our dogs care about the TV is when there is a dog barking so they have to answer.

I’ve long felt and accepted that dogs are smarter.
I just prefer cats.
Now, if I wanted a really smart animal, I’d get a pig.

Until I see police walking around with drug/explosive/cadaver sniffing cats, dogs win.Sniffing out explosives? Me thinks that cats are smarter than dogs for that reason alone.

cats are smarter: no one can MAKE them do anything they don’t want to do, and they they get pretty much everything they demand. I wish I was smart enough to get away with all of that ...

Some canines can learn over 400 commands. Cats don’t even come close. Both learn commands reinforced by treats. Dumb Border Collies are way beyond the smartest cat.
