Posted for Daffynition:

Researchers at CanCog Technologies, a private institution in Toronto that studies behavior and aging in companion animals, have tested dogs and cats on the same tasks, using cats that show the same level of interest in food rewards as the dogs. They found that cats make more errors than dogs and require more trials to learn the same tasks.

> cats don’t give a crap about your obedience tests <

Ha! Well said. Dogs are royalists (and the owner is the king). Cats are libertarians.

Smart can be interpreting information correctly.

In which case, I’m willing to wager you that my dog is dumber than your dog. But just as lovable.

> Researchers found that dogs possess around 530 million cortical neurons, while cats only have around 250 million. <

That might be true. But dogs use 90% of their intelligence to please their owners. Cats use 90% of their intelligence to please themselves. Bottom line: Cats win.

Disclaimer: My cat forced me to post this.

Wonderful! Especially the tiny area for “Ability to distinguish what IS a chew toy from what ISN’T”.

Our sofa used to have 3 huge cushions that flowed from the back down into the seat. Our Irish Wolfhound puppy walked away with one and ate it.

They’re both smarter than any Dummycrat.

I recently saw a sticker on a car that said, "My dog is a Democrat." I felt like leaving a note saying, "Of course it is. It lies around doing nothing all day long waiting for someone else to feed it." That said, I like dogs a lot more than I like Democrats.

Funny my son and I were just watching kitty videos, starting with my recalling the cat hero:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEa6jZv-Khc

This video covers 2 talking points in one: that dogs are wonderful (not) and cats don’t care (not). Dogs DO attack, and sometimes cats care enough to do something.

Yeah, I know this has nothing to do with intelligence, but I see the thread is already digressing.

And BTW, brain SIZE has nothing to do with it, else the elephant would be smartest. It’s either relative to body, or the surface area (folds).

LOL...love your post. If a cat and dog both ran for President....the cat would win. The cat is independent and thinks...doesn’t take crap from anyone. The dog is a copycat, will do anything you say....but doesn’t think for itself....they are dependent.

I have always known that dogs are smarter and some dogs are a lot smarter than others.

Collies and Shepherds are really smart. Bulldogs not so much.

Interesting video. Thank you. Glad the cat was okay.

Digress the thread all you want. One of the joys of FReeping is that these conversations wander all over the universe because everyone has such wonderfully different backgrounds and knowledge.

Excellent point on the brain size. Wonder if they can housebreak elephants.

My border collies were very clever, as were my shelties. Most of the rest not so much. But my Havanese has incredible pattern recognition. Daffynition posts tiny gifs and my dog always spots them and goes bonkers. He lies on the end of the hassock with his nose near the TV waiting for a horse or dog to appear. Even a modernistic cartoon animal is recognizable to him. Husband has had to cover up the monitor background of pictures of our old pets as it drives Rory batty.

Bingo.

Dogs vary SOOOO greatly, including intelligence. Some are very smart (and they often share cat-like traits, LOL), others are a box of rocks.

I think she ran back to yell at her husband, who had no idea what happened. Probably to call 911.

I want to know why someone was videotaping long before the event and after the child disappeared from view.

“Ability to distinguish what IS a chew toy from what ISN’T”.

I got a kick out of the brain diagram as well. Although with the two dogs we’ve owned I’ve been amazed at how they can tell the difference between one of their toys and the kid’s toys (stuffed animals, etc.) and of course shoes and socks.

Although the first dog did chew up a toy tiger/figure type thing. My young daughter was crushed! Turns out the thing was made out of hide (cow?), and the hair colored like a tiger. That dog was also apt to eat any of their sandwiches that they left down low on the coffee table, etc.

Our current dog doesn’t get into much - even food left low. I’m not sure if that is smart - or it is just well-behaved. Smart would be “I’m going to eat this yummy sandwich if they are too stupid to leave it out for me!”

We have two dogs and four cats. Our one male cat watches the sport of Curling. He will sit in front of the TV and watch an entire match and will leave during commercials to use the litter box then return to finish the match.
