Only liberals believe people will only do what they are compelled or enticed to do.

Charity is charity - when we make them tax deductible (which a great many in the middle class can’t leverage anyway), we turn it into a partial welfare program by the government.
I certainly won't stop dumping my garage sale leftovers to Goodwill cuz I won't get a deduction.
This effects the high income folks. They're likely the ones that got it in as a deduction to start with.
Yep, the SWAMP is loaded with these donations are tax deductible non-charitable organizations. And they frequently pay their officers huge incomes.
Yep, because every time I drop my change in the Salvation Army kettle I make the bell-ringer stop and give me a receipt for it. /S
(One of the few charities I really like and trust btw)
This is total BS. If you believe in the cause, you will still donate. If you’re a relatively small giver, it won’t help your tax bill, but it will just be already included in the expanded standard deduction. If you are a significant giver, you’ll be pushed beyond the standard deduction and see some tax savings. I don’t give to my church and other charitable causes for the tax break (that’s already, from a purely personal financial point of view, a losing proposition), I give because God blessed me with the resources I have and my church and the charities I donate to support the things in which I believe.
Crew lol! 2 people who post 75% of the posts on tax threads. I really wish we had a bozo filter here.
The amount that reflects a true tax savings with standard deduction is almost a joke. The loss of SALT deduction will hurt some but I dont see any significant change in peoples contributions to charity. Christians especially will still gift out of love.
Back in 1985 I was a Boeing employee. I was one of the ones selected to tour organizations supported by United way. There were about twenty of us on a nice corporate bus visiting places all over the Seattle area.
What I saw caused me to take action. To wit, when I got back to the office I started the arduous process of stopping all donations from my paycheck to United Way. It really pi$$ed off my boss and it was definitely a CLM (Career Limiting Move). But I moved to a different company anyway, so no harm.
I’ve heard this canard before, that people will stop giving. Well, giving a hundred to save twenty in taxis is kinda, well, dumb. All it does is allow your money to stretch farther. People that don’t itemize will not be affected, and it’s about time we got the giving aligned with the reason for giving. If you’re giving because of a tax deduction, you’re doing it wrong.
2 Corinthians 9:6-7 English Standard Version (ESV)
6 The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully[a] will also reap bountifully. 7 Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
What I love about non-deductible giving is that you can give CASH and make sure the left hand doesn’t know what the right hand is doing.
Frankly, I’d like to see ALL deductions removed. Every one.
And the tax rate lowered.
With the market booming and the economy ALREADY growing 3.3% despite hits from the hurricanes, the pocketbook voters will vote Republican.
Draining the swamp. The overhead and payment for the executives of the United Way, is...well, it’s been noted at FR before, I believe.
Not to mention their support of PP/abortions and gun control (and other leftist causes)...

I donate $100 evey year to the non profit association that looks after the little cemetery in my hometown. I appreciated taking this off my tax bill because 100 cents on the dollar will go toward the cemetery’s upkeep.
Can any government program match this ?
I stopped donating to United Way a long time ago - shortly after I saw where they spent their (our) money...
Agree. Notice that figures cited are by IRS and indicate monetary value claimed, not actual cash value given. Do you suspect there might be a difference? Figures lie and liars figure!
I itemize significantly and my taxes are still going down. That doesn’t even count the added value of the stock market soaring, bringing my net wealth up significantly.
I’m fine with no deductions for charities. I often donate items without asking for a receipt, and what I give to the church will be given anyway.
I think all state and local taxes, including decals and inspections stickers, should not be taxed. It’s just wrong to pay taxes on taxes.
I quit giving to United Way when I found out that when I designate a specific charity, they offset my donation by taking away what they would normally contribute to that charity and give it to some charity I don’t agree with. It’s a vast game of switcheroo.
He's the only "charity" getting the most $$$$$!
Had a similar experience.
Said I would rather give to the various organizations directly without UW getting their cut. Was told to bring my itemized tax return showing that I did just that or their would be “issues”.
Brought my returns in. Showed HR and my manager. Still got in trouble for being an “A##hole”. Which I am.
