And then every year we’ll argue over who the eighth team should be.

Yes, the SEC and OSU. Today, the committee had to choose between their two favorites.

The Sooners aren’t my favorite team (Baylor grad here, as well as major UT fan), but I want my conference’s representative to do well. If Baker Mayfield gets his hiney kicked at some point during a game, I’m good with that; I’m definitely not a fan of his.

no matter how many playoff spots there are 8,16,32 and on and on, there will always be an argument about the last one or two spots. At least in basketball where they have 64 and a few teams playing for the last spots, they could double up on the 64 and let everyone in. You can play 3 basketball games a week.

This is why we need an eight-team playoff format.

Fine with me, but that wouldn't eliminate all disputes any more than the 68 team NCAA basketball selection does. Actually, the more slots to be filled, the more there are to argue about. But it would give more teams a chance to prove they can compete with the big name schools.

And I don't think conferernce champs should get an automatic spot in an expanded playoff.

Auburn gets beat by Ga. and drops to 17 lmao

It is now officially, the Alabama Invitational Tournament.

Clemson will pound on Bama.

My plan is to have the Power 5 conference champs all qualify with one at-large, to make it 6 teams. The top two seeds get a bye.

So with my plan the playoff teams would be seeded accordingly:

1. Clemson (bye)
2. OU (bye)
3 Georgia
4 Bama
5 Ohio State
6 USC

I think Urban Meyer’s response last night suggests that he doesn’t care as much as most folks about making this playoff. He takes the long view — recruit the best players, develop them fully, win every football game that the good Lord puts in front of them, and do right by his players whether that means going to the NFL or launching into life as an OSU grad and adult. Put differently, focus on those matters that are under the football program’s control and tune everything else out.

He’ll be happy to go up against USC (or whoever), win his last game of the season, and come out the other side with the nation’s #1 recruiting class. Then it’s all looking forward to 2018-2019.

That should be every other coach’s position too, and every fan’s. I suspect at the end of the day the top Power 5 coaches all or nearly all take this view.

There are huge implications from this move. Not much separates 2/3/4/5/6/7/8; and this year in particular the committee is navel gazing excessively. If one could hypothetically run thousands of trials among these 8 teams, then six of the eight would rack up significant national championships. There just is not that much separating them. These are 20-year olds for goodness sake, and there is huge variation in their performances week-to-week. We know this because OSU got clobbered by Iowa, Clemson lost to Syracuse, OK lost to IA State, etc. Even the best teams have off nights.

The decision does further damage to football conferences, in the end I think irreparable. I think this committee knows that conference championships are pointless and that soon they will be replaced with an 8-game playoff. Their decision is inexplicable otherwise.

Personally, I think the undermining of conferences in this manner will make college football less enjoyable and less compelling.

Plus, I just HATE the NCAA. As a fan, as the parent of a former D1 athlete, and as a citizen/taxpayer who just cannot believe what they get away with (including extortion of $60M from PA taxpayers over the Penn State fiasco).

I could live with that as well.

"The only chance for Bama is to get Tua more involved, they won’t win with Hurts at QB."

I agree. The team should not be in a position that the opposition can win the game in the closing seconds. Put points on the board, dang it!

That is because a two-loss Auburn was overranked by the committee when they put them at 2.

The only drawback is if a conference, like this year’s Pac-12 is particularly weak.

The problem with football in general, is that injuries, as we saw yesterday with Auburn and Kerryon Johnson, can very quickly make a great team a very average one.

"Glad the selection committee didn’t/couldn’t overlook the OSU 31 point loss to Iowa, as so many fans and commentators thought they should. That was just too much to overlook."

Yup. I saw one of the guys from the selection committee say that.

He also said that they didn't look at what division, etc teams were in....just picked the four best teams.

Two teams from the SEC is the complaint.

The same problem exists in the pros, and that is why wildcards or at-large teams would be needed. But at least the formula would be understood by fans.

Hmmm ... Here is what I think should happen.

The Big10 Conference should agree to this statement:

“Each football season our conference will make its champion available to play in the 4-team playoff. If the committee elects not to take our champion then no other team will be made available. We will take all of our bowl-eligible teams elsewhere.”

That would fix the problem right there. College football needs strong conferences, not navel-gazing ADs and former coaches.

That’s why I don’t want too many teams in the playoffs. It rewards the team that gets hot at the right time, rather than rewards teams for what they did throughout the year.
