(5th LD) N. Korean troops violated armistice in chasing defector: UNC
SEOUL, Nov. 22 (Yonhap) -- The United Nations Command (UNC) announced Wednesday that North Korea clearly violated the 1953 Armistice Agreement twice last week, when its border security guards tried to hunt down a fellow soldier defecting to South Korea via Panmunjom.
The command released video clips lasting a total of around seven minutes showing the dramatic incident that happened at the Joint Security Area (JSA) of the truce village on Nov. 13.
The footage starts with a jeep speeding toward the so-called 72-hour bridge, at which point the CCTV timeline reads "2017-11-13 15:11." In the video, the jeep passes by a checkpoint in the direction of the Military Demarcation Line (MDL) before making a quick right turn by a monument to Kim Il-sung, which is the starting point of the northern part of the JSA. The driver was apparently intending to cross the border by the car.
After its wheel apparently came loose, however, the soldier, clad in a Korean People's Army (KPA) uniform, exited it and dashed toward the South.
Four North Korean guards, armed with pistols and rifles, immediately pursued him several meters behind, opening fire.
The defector was shot five times, with some of the gunshots flying over the MDL. A North Korean guard also crossed the MDL for a few seconds and then returned to the North's side.
The UNC stressed that the North Korean troops' acts were in breach of the Armistice Agreement that ended the Korean War.
"The key findings of the special investigation team are that the KPA violated the Armistice Agreement by one, firing weapons across the MDL, and two, by actually crossing the MDL temporarily," U.S. Army Col. Chad Carroll, UNC's public affairs chief, said at a briefing.
Dramatic vid. Thanks.
If or when he recovers, could a visit to the White House be conceivable?
The ones running after the defector should have just kept running with him!
The fact KPA violated the Armistice Agreement twice in this event gives us the upper hand and probably why they changed the rules of engagement....we’ll shoot back.
I cannot imagine how both sides felt during and after this. Just a remarkable event in every way.
I wonder how many North Korean border guards will be executed for failing to stop the defector. To encourage the rest to do better next time, of course.
Interesting. Link?
It seems to me that I've read only sidearms are allowed right at the border, but the North obviously violates this: If JSA is to not risk their soldiers greatly, they will have to "upgrade" as well, which of course might be responded to by the North, and so on.
Talk about your dicey situations...
Later
“Dicey” ..Yep...
I don’t know about what they do or don’t do in guns they use...only that we’ll shoot back if they fire on a deserter now.
.....”Every soldier involved will be examined to the last minute gesture. Anybody found to be slack will regret that he did not join the guy he was shooting at as you said”....
No telling how many will be affected as generational punishment comes into play.... It’s such a brutal regime.
I’ve often thought possible if we get on a active war footing ...and the NK border soldiers believe it’s coming...how many will risk a run to the S.Korean side as this brave man did? or if they’d even try.
Well, what I’ve read is that only sidearms are permitted right at the border, but those N. Korean soldiers had and used a lot more firepower than that. I don’t see how our side can ask its soldiers to engage if bullets fly... with only handguns.
There’s far more than hand guns on either side to be sure.
After 32 days under Dr. Lee’s care, the NK soldier who escaped through the Joint Security Area (JSA) has been moved to SK’s Army Hospital. A helicopter was sent to move him under heavy security as NK agents are believed to be seeking his assassination.

The soldier is making news on another front: SK’s cookie company Orion wants to give him a lifetime supply of Choco Pie, upon hearing he told hospital staff he wants one. Orion sent 100 boxes to him immediately but he wasn’t ready to eat solid food yet.
We(=NoonInKorea) explained before that if he provides valuable intel, his hospital expenses will be paid by SK’s intel agency NIS (formerly K-CIA); if not, the Unification Ministry will foot the bill. Looks like it’s already been decided that the NIS will pay his bills.
Thanks for updates...good knowing he’s recovering well and in good hands.
