I remember reading how they collapsed India’s textile industry after they industrialized the process and then used those proceeds to buy the opium that they would later sell to the Chinese. IIRC China was was causing a trade deficit with England with teas sales but weren’t interested in reciprocating as far as trade was concerned. So they found something they could sell to them.
She knows how to operate.
Oh, nuts! My Go-Bag would have to be at the dry cleaners this weekend!!!
Meh, she’s okay. I work with prettier girls
Not Guilty
Laz would hit it.........
You believe that Wiki page? So who measured GDP in the 17th century?
“There was no modern medicine in Britain when they invaded India in the 1600s.”
True. And there would probably still not be much modern medicine in India if Britain had not occupied it.
“Be careful what you believe.”
I’ll just continue to believe the facts, thanks.
“England didnt do any favors.”
Maybe not intentionally, but it worked out that way. Today no widows will be burned to death with their dead husbands. Today no one in all of India will be strangled by the Thuggee. Thank the British for that.
She’s a pretty girl, looks Italian in this photo. But, when you marry someone remember you are marrying the family too. I could not deal with the Indian accents and curry is a deal-breaker for me. As if she was interested in me, lol.
I give up, whats the answer to the riddle, it is a riddle , right?
That’s a reach. I certainly can’t refute it without a crystal ball and mine is in the shop.
“Thats a reach. I certainly cant refute it without a crystal ball and mine is in the shop.”
No, it’s just logic. The British and Portuguese really brought modern medicine to India. That’s just a fact. If you don’t believe me then just read David Arnold’s book,
Colonizing the Body: State Medicine and Epidemic Disease in Nineteenth-Century India, (New Delhi: Oxford University Press, 1995). Even the study of Indian medicine in a thorough modern way was a WESTERN THING. Think I’m kidding? Read H. H. Wilson’s classic article called, “On the Medical and Surgical Sciences of the Hindus,” which was published in The Oriental Magazine, Vol. 1, pages 207-212, (Calcutta: Feb. 1823). Notice, it was published in English, IN CALCUTTA, and was all about Indian medicine. Volume 2 is online, but I can’t find Volume 1 for you, sorry.
Have you ever wondered why so many Japanese medical journals were publishing articles in LATIN in the 1920??? Because modern medicine was a WESTERN THING and every modern trained doctor learned Latin in school AROUND THE WORLD.
Western medicine in the 19th century isn’t anything I’d call modern either. YMMV
Well consider recent events the metaphorical blowing of autumn leaves off the lawn. The girl ploy failed more than once now and those who would tamper with current trends are going to have to rethink their stratagem. Abe and Trump deciding to dump the food into the pond as opposed to just spooning it out was a telegraph to other nations that were told to be paying attention. They were signaling that it was time to pull the pump. Pull the pump! Now we are going to have to address situations that have been long dormant and while at first there will be resistance and sluggishness to unearthing them, they obviously must be dealt with sooner rather than later.
Lol! Can't stand that stinking stuff either. It gets into clothes, your skin. I feel so fortunate growing up as an Italian. My mother was 100%. My father, who was from Tennessee, was a mixture of several things, his family having been in Tennessee for many generations. He even had a bit Cherokee in him. He could cook his butt off too. His Chicken & Dumplings was my favorite.
I can guarantee you I do know exactly what I’m talking about.
After 30 they’re all headed downhill.
The question is the slope. Some accelerate slowly and others hit warp speed almost immediately.
In order to offer specific commentary on how fast, I would want to see pictures of her mother at similar ages.
It rains in the spring sometimes here in Utah.
Is this the right response?
Can I mambo dogface to the banana patch.
Ahh, yes, it means the revolution begins in Ogden.
Oops, better erase that.
That was last year. And it was a lotta fun! ;-)
