k thanks- I’ll stick with firefox 54 for now- if i can find out how to turn off updates- in hte update panel it just says soemthign about search engine updates- not the browser update

Go to Options - General

Scroll down to Firefox Updates.

Mozilla has apparently disabled the easily-found option to turn off automatic updates. HOWEVER, you can easily do it via the about:config method.

1. Type about:config in the search bar.

2. Scroll down to the below line and change from true to false:
app.update.auto: false

If you are still on 54, your setup is not auto-updating. Just leave things alone.

But, if it does update, go here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/install-older-version-of-firefox
