Time is important, too while some effects are noticeable immediately, others only begin to crop up after months or years of use.
The comparison is slightly unfair for another reason: While scientists have been researching the effects of alcohol for decades, the science of cannabis is a lot murkier because of its mostly illegal status.

I would counter that these leanings are more libertarian than what has become of the Republican party and conservatives in general. It's a shame, because our version of nanny state shouldn't be okay because they represent ideas on our side.

Also, there is no use for alcohol in your health outside of risking intoxication. There is the benefit of flavor in cooking with it and burning off the alcohol, but that is a weak benefit. Cannabis has non intoxicating forms like CBD oil, which has beneficial properties for various conditions and pain.
Aged Bourbon tastes better than skunk weed. 'Nuff said.
