John Hillerman, the actor who made a career out of playing snooty types, including Tom Selleck's fastidious estate caretaker Jonathan Quayle Higgins III on Magnum, P.I., died Thursday. He was 84.
Hillerman, who received four Emmy nominations in consecutive years for portraying Higgins and won in 1987, died at his home in Houston, family spokeswoman Lori De Waal told the Associated Press. She said the cause of death had not been determined.
Hillerman also appeared as Higgins on episodes of Murder, She Wrote and Simon & Simon.

He was still posting when I asked him so it was before that.
I didn’t know him, just saw him post the one time.
From Texas, was in Chinatown one the great movies of all time.
Mel Brooks, Burton Gilliam, is Carol Arthur (Dom DeLuis widow) still alive? So many have passed. You’re right gator.
I have a DVD set of the “Ellery Queen” series. It holds up VERY well.
Hillerman, Jim Hutton and David Wayne were perfect.
I STILL can’t believe NBC cancelled such an entertaining, quality series.
I agree, Mears! You’re fantastic! Long may you run! :)
Dittoes on “Chinatown.” An incomparable classic.
Every day is a gift!
He was also Dept. Hardin in Paper Moon a beautiful movie.
Terrific role as Higgins.

No problem, got the complete series on DVD. Was what got me watching TV in my early 30’s.
What roll did he have in Chinatown? Cannot recall seeing him in that.
He played Yaleburton, the assistant to the murdered Hollis Murray.
