Please excuse if this is posted incorrectly, it's my first "vanity". Setting aside all the scary fake news and real terrorism, what scary stories - personal or in the news would y'all care to pass along around the FR campefire? I'll start with the true story of Elisa Lam in the next post.

I’ve been attacked by actual phantoms in this life. I mean real, disembodied spirits.

One such incident occurred when I had just moved into a rooming house, in 1975. I was given a room with a balcony, overlooking the front entry to the building. It was neat, orderly, and appeared to be little used.

After some unpacking, I settled in for a night’s sleep. It seemed that I had only just dozed off, when I began to be aroused by ‘something’ bothersome. It felt like someone was prying into my mind and commanding my attention.

Within no time, I felt myself in a furious struggle over the motor controls of my body. Some mysterious presence was trying to move my body from the bed, to the floor.

As the fight wore on, I found my body creeping slowly across the floor to the french doors that led to the balcony above the concrete walk below. I could sense that this force, whatever it was, was trying to get me to throw myself off the balcony.

At some point, I found myself up against the french doors with my hand on the door handle. I can’t tell you how hard I fought the ‘presence’ for control of that hand, but I failed. In moments that door was open, and there I was - fighting with every ounce of my being to keep my body from going over the balustrades.

I suppose the specter of imminent death gave me a renewed strength, but somehow I mustered the power to command the demon to let go of me. Within seconds, I was in full control of my motor abilities, and got myself back into the room.

Needless to say, I didn’t sleep that night, and gave the manager an earful the next day. He apologized and told me that he’d mistakenly rented me that room. Turns out, it had been previously occupied by a nutcase who threw themselves over the balcony to their death.

HINT:

If you stay at that hotel, and take a shower, keep your mouth closed.

And brush your teeth with bottled water.

(Did I guess the right story from the clues?)

Not exactly scary (to me), but made a few Japanese have to go home and change their pants :D

Back around 1999 (or so) I had purchased a pretty realistic alien costume that included a fitting robe (pullover with hood included) and gloves that also looked real to finish it off.

At the time, I was working in Ginza (Tokyo) and it was a weekend (Chuo-Dori (a main street) is closed down to traffic on Saturday and Sunday for Japanese shoppers and tourists).
The business I worked at was on the 5th floor facing Chuo-dori, so there were about 25 students watching out the window looking down onto the street.
(anyone who doesn’t know Japanese: they panic at anything that is unknown (or “alien” to them ;^D )
So... I ran out onto the street zig-zagging between Japanese shoppers from one end of the block to the other end, touching people on the shoulder with the alien hand as I swooped by, where I disappeared into a small hallway that led to a small elevator to go back up to my workplace.

Sadly, I wasn’t able to see the reactions of the people between point A and point B.. but the description that the students gave me of the scene was hillarious (and most of them were getting a look at the orneriness of an outside culture :D
They were telling me that there were definitely Japanese that had froze/wet their pants, a couple of faints (now I started feeling guilty :p), and MANY people running in all directions screaming (I could hear that while I was scurrying past them).

It was fun and exiting (and young and stupid) , but I will never do that again... I hope I didn’t give anyone a heart-attack :/

Well, the students got a kick out of it and enjoyed it... it also loosened them up (from their uptight culture) :~)
Apologies this wasn’t a dangerous horror experience, but I hope it was an interesting experience to share :)
And sorry there aren’t more details, I am a terrible with details :p

“Did I guess the right story from the clues?”

Yeah, but your advice would also go if you’re referring to a trip to Europe or Mexico.
:D

“Not exactly scary (to me), but made a few Japanese have to go home and change their pants”

You have to keep in mind they were brought up on Godzilla movies.

Dunno about the atheist part - but he is a scam artist, as are most of his guests. But I suppose they all gotta make a buck somehow.

You’re confusing it with “Microwave Massacre”:

But I don’t know, actually. I’ve never read about it.

“The Appointment in Samarra”
(as retold by W. Somerset Maugham - 1933)

The speaker is Death

There was a merchant in Bagdad who sent his servant to market to buy provisions and in a little while the servant came back, white and trembling, and said, Master, just now when I was in the marketplace I was jostled by a woman in the crowd and when I turned I saw it was Death that jostled me. She looked at me and made a threatening gesture, now, lend me your horse, and I will ride away from this city and avoid my fate. I will go to Samarra and there Death will not find me.

The merchant lent him his horse, and the servant mounted it, and he dug his spurs in its flanks and as fast as the horse could gallop he went. Then the merchant went down to the marketplace and he saw me standing in the crowd and he came to me and said, Why did you make a threating getsture to my servant when you saw him this morning? That was not a threatening gesture, I said, it was only a start of surprise. I was astonished to see him in Bagdad, for I had an appointment with him tonight in Samarra.

Karloff delivers it almost verbatim. Excellent story and reading.

Although Noory is sympathetic to Catholicism, he is probably best described as a Deist and Spiritualist rather than an Atheist.

Back around the late 80’s, I had occasion to go to the Hotel Cecil to look for individuals who were not following orders of the court. As a female often working alone, I can say the Cecil creeped me out while other such assignments didn’t bother me. There is a new series about the Cecil on Discover ID which just told the story of the girl referenced here who disappeared, awful ending. I love the history of old buildings that were once grand, and enjoy visiting them, but won’t be stopping by the Cecil anytime soon.

“Speaking of planes and ghosts: John Fuller wrote a fascinating book decades ago entitled ‘The Ghost of Flight 401’:

Sounds interesting. I saw a crashed commuter that was in a hanger. Immediately creeped me out, details of which I won’t go into. When I worked in OR, during orientation I commented to a spiritually sensitive co-worker that there were too many people hanging around in the trauma OR for my comfort, and she concurred. But not all experiences are bad. I got a welcoming party when my husband and I went to Kauai. That was different. Definitely the Aloha state.

Not to sound newagey-hippie, but I think some places do have “vibes” about them.
Yes, the story of that poor girl, Elisa Lam, is both sad and bizarre.
Thanks for sharing your experience at the place.
