The NFL appears interested in social justice reform, but Chargers tackle Russell Okung isnt buying the talk from the league office.
Okung attended the recent meeting in New York with other NFL players, owners, union and league representatives, but the lack of action since then may prompt him and others to skip next weeks scheduled meeting.
"NFL officials appear unmotivated and don't share the same sense of urgency. Increasingly, the meetings appear unproductive at best and disingenuous at worst, Okung said (via ESPN.com). Furthermore, the ongoing disparagement of Colin Kaepernick is a factor needing remedy for the players and public to feel heard and for real progress to be made."
Kaepernick is expected to be invited to Tuesdays meeting in New York.
Reports before the first meeting Oct. 17 said players wanted a month dedicated to social justice. After the meeting, the NFL said it wouldnt mandate standing for the national anthem, pledged to support programs to effect social change on the issues and Commissioner Roger Goodell and Seahawks wide receiver Doug Baldwin signed a letter to Congressional leaders urging them to pass the Sentencing Reform and Corrections Act of 2017, which would reduce minimum sentences for nonviolent drug offenders.
But Okung expected more.
"I thought there were concrete plans to help," Okung said. "To my dismay, that wasn't true at all. It's only remained as just talking. There hasn't been any action.
"It's disappointing, because anytime the NFL says it cares about something, like breast cancer awareness, domestic violence, concussions, it comes out in force. So far we haven't seen that."
I meant SJWL.
“Reports before the first meeting Oct. 17 said players wanted a month dedicated to social justice.”
They got more than a month and change to show they hate America and whitey. What more do these animals want?
What is the NFL doing about <4% of the population committing 50% of the violent crime?
Yeah, I thought so.
I also learned that once here those Africans would out-work the typical "African American" by a factor of 10.And wouldn't wind up in prison either.
That's because unlike the other things mentioned, "social injustice for black people in America" is complete horse manure.
Well, the NFL Comish is way too white...
It’s important to them so we should listen. Undercutting the NFL’s bottom line is not too smart unless you know the owners will back down.
Cut him loose so he can protest full time.
And if the NFL owners had made a decision before meeting with the rabble you would have called for their heads for disrespecting you.
PS you PLAY for the Chargers, considering them a professional team is technically true but...
Too many white folk in football, that is the problem. All the problem be solved if they get rid of whitey. Oh, but whitey need to watch tv or dey goes broke.
Holy cow, these guys are doubling down on stupidity every damn day. Any conservative that watches this crap is enabling the enemy.
Okay, you want social justice? How about being pain $15/hr so you can know what it’s like to flip burgers someplace, but only when you’re actually playing, not standing around waiting for some official call or a time out. You actually play maybe fifteen minutes in a four hour game; one hour quarters to be exact.
Was this guy an SJW before he got engaged/married to Samar Mekhail?
Just curious.
What is social justice and why would a football league be able to effect it?
Then we can see who is who.
Not anymore
I really feel stupid. What is the NFL supposed to do? I mean, what are the protests supposed to accomplish? What am I missing?
He’s aksing for trouble.
