Camille Paglia: Public Schools Creating Students Who ‘Know Nothing’
Breitbart ^ | 10/23/2017 | Dr. Susan Berry

Posted on 10/25/2017 11:04:11 AM PDT by simpson96

Outspoken feminist Camille Paglia says the current generation of hyper-sensitive, safety-seeking college students was gradually created by the downward spiral of public education that has left them ignorant of history and geography and focused, instead, on viewing America as an evil nation.

(snip) Paglia said:

What has happened is these young people now getting to college have no sense of history of any kind. No sense of history. No world geography. No sense of the violence and the barbarities of history. So, they think that the whole world has always been like this, a kind of nice, comfortable world where you can go to the store and get orange juice and milk, and you can turn on the water and the hot water comes out. They have no sense whatever of destruction, of the great civilizations that rose and fell, and so on, and how arrogant people get when they’re in a comfortable civilization, etc. So they now are being taught to look around them to see defects in America – which is the freest country in the history of the world – and to feel that somehow America is the source of all evil in the universe, and it’s because they’ve never been exposed to the actual evil of the history of humanity. They know nothing!

Paglia, a professor at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, slammed the trend of public schools beginning the teaching of “identity politics,” such as that found in “sexual harassment sensitivity training” and “diversity training,” all the while true education is absent.

“It’s really started at the level of public school education,” she noted. “I’ve been teaching now for 46 years as a classroom teacher, and I have felt the slow devolution of the quality of public school education in the classroom.”

Paglia asserted its consequences are analogous to the last days of the Roman Empire.

That tends to be an over-used simile but on this particular topic it's painfully pertinent. The term "enervation" has been applied to the increasing reluctance of the Roman citizens to do for themselves, to depend on the state for sustenance and on foreigners for defense. It also refers to a loss of appreciation of just what it meant to be a Roman citizen and the loss of value of that citizenship as it was conferred too easily on those who hadn't earned it and who refused to recognize the concomitant obligations. Civic pride turned to lassitude, and the patriotic Romans remaining found that they couldn't defend their nation in the face of so many of its citizens who wouldn't.

This society must be defended from the lectern as much as from the foxhole and it hasn't been. The coming fight won't be restricted to the streets.

“I’m pretty sure Camille went to public school.”

I’ve heard her speak about how she was educated by nuns.

I know she had nuns in her family but I still think she went to public school.

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the other articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)

The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.

When the NEA decided that their students needed to be taught how to emote rather than how to think, they had to push away all of the classes and ways of teaching that would exercise the reasoning aspects of a child's mind.

They had to bring in sex ed to inflame passions. That is a major accomplishment in that any learning that takes place once a child enters puberty is crippled when kid's passions are enflamed even more through sexual training.

They had to rearrange a child's thinking so as to remove the way of thinking they learned from their parents. So they have the kids go thru specific exercises to hamper their parent's training.

To be able to accomplish this switch go thinking and inflammation of passions they first of all, they had to hamper a child's ability to read, so they demoted phonics. They also had to demote God.

They decided to not teach citizenship.

Handwriting is not needed because "everyone uses computers." (Being able to write legibly is a mark of being an educated person), so yeah remove penmanship.

Introduce math that does not engage personal reasoning and also make their ability to do math to mimic someone who cannot do math. New math, Rainforest math. Common Core math.

Who needs to learn how to spell? We now have spellcheckers. (Being a good speller is another indicator of an educated person.)

This is the result - Children have been indoctrinated to only rely on reason as opposed to faith, and yet they do not give them ANY tools of reasoning to allow the child to use their reasoning.

Our children have been trained to be citizens of the Communist Utopia planned for them in the 1920s.

One more interesting fact. When the American government helped the Japanese get back up on their feet after WWII, they put into place American education at that time which was still top notch. Their students today are equal to what American students were like just after WWII. Our education has progressively downhill to the point to where we are last on all the important indicators.

John Dewey, the NEA and the progressive education goons are to be blamed for all of this.

It’s not that they “know nothing” - it’s that they “know” so much that isn’t so, IOW untruths taught in the classroom, dialectic turned into lesson plans.

She got that right.

I went through a fast food drive-thru and the kid could not figure out the correct change for a ten on my $5.96 order.

Then he called the manager, and he couldn’t do it either!

I made a hardcore old school pitch recently in an AA meeting, and a snowflake newcomer scolded me for being “passive-aggressive.”

I’m trying to help save lives, families, careers, sanity—and people worry more about political correctness.

Form over substance. But if I give a damn about the guy, I must bend some to reach him.

46 years. She started teaching around about when the incipient rot started becoming overt. Wife has been teaching a decade less and in Florida which has always been “behind” the schools up nawth. That used to mean our students were less academically advanced. We are still about a decade behind but now it means our kids know more real stuff, except, of course, in N.O. That’s a special case.

America ultimately cannot recover for the same reason Palestine cannot be a successful state. The education systems in both are finely and completely focused on creating compliant masses who know not enough about anything to challenge the rulers.
