There are more than half a million vegans in Britain, and that number is rising everyday — making a plant-based diet one of the nation’s fastest growing lifestyle choices. It’s why this month several of the country’s biggest chain restaurants have launched or expanded vegan menus, so that those who eschew all animal products have more choice when they dine out.

Many assume that a vegan lifestyle is much healthier than being a meat eater or even than being simply vegetarian — but some of the new menu items prove that vegan dishes are not always good for you.

Some of the new plant-based dishes on menus at popular high street eateries contain more than 1,000 calories, and more fat than a McDonald’s Big Mac. […]

Zizzi has the two most calorific vegan dishes of the most popular chain restaurants that have a vegan menu and supply nutritional information. Its two new vegan pizzas — the vegan pepperonata topped with peppers and chillies, and the vegan zucca topped with butternut squash, with both featuring vegan mozzarella — contain more than 1,200 calories each. That’s more than half a women’s daily recommended calorie allowance. They also both contain more than 4 grams of salt each — which is two thirds of an adult’s recommended daily allowance. …

"However, if you just stop eating meat, and make up for it by eating a bunch of other junk. I'm sure you would and could get fat."

This.

I knew a vegetarian liberal who was overweight.

She took a bite of a pepperoni pizza one night, and then got hooked on animal protein again.

She immediately lost 20 pounds.

Go figure.

It’s the carbs that will get you.

With enough carbs and not enough protein, you can and probably will, still get fat.

I make a banana shake with ice, almond milk, bananas, cinnamon and a few walnuts.

Wife makes those all the time when we get bananas a bit too ripe. Does add a good heap of protein powder.

Well, with brains about the size of tennis balls, I wouldn’t expect it.

However, the salt-water crocodile of Australia has a brain the size of a walnut and is also a voracious meat eater.

Had a friend die at the ripe old age of
33....he ate nothing but meat...colon cancer. Not saying lack of vegetables
was the cause.

“n my experience British food tastes like garbage. “

Cook ALL food, meat/veggies, until it turns gray.

Vegie diets are very unhealthy. You can expect to have low energy, sickness and a shorter lifespan by eating vegan diets.

If Vegans don’t like earth food, they can always go back to Vega.

Well, what meat eater would visit a vegan restaurant other than by accident?

Lunch date with the hot girl from accounting? Even then, I'd be wondering whether there would be much of an up side.

I need to self edit better....I meant “chicken, fish, pork and beef”....I grew up learning “meat” was all of those. And, yes, you have to balance your diet.
