The old Civil War carol "I Heard the Bells" by the Trail Band. Using Trek's "Undiscovered Country."
Hmmm.... could ya hum a few bars...just kiddin’
Sounds like it must be good one!

what has that got to do with star trek? huh?
Literary music videos force the interpretation of the poetry of lyrics into a video context. In this case, Trek. The Civil War carol is about the desire for peace. Kirk has no desire for peace because the Klingons have killed his son. It’s Spock who is trying to bring them together and Kirk rejecting it. The episode revolves around the hidden desire of some people to forment that war.
When I started making these in 1986, I divided them into living room videos that took knowing the show and were frequently layered in meanings that people wrote about in books, and auditorium videos that used so much visual matching to the lyrics that you didn’t need to know much. This one I would class as a living room video, but there are lots of FR people who know the Trek movies, so it should work for them.
If you mean connecting a carol to a TV show, that I find absolute joy. Two loves in one piece. If carols in your world shouldn’t connect to TV shows, these won’t be for you. But they’ll work for many people.
I love studying the Civil War. Many ancestors and relatives served on both sides. That’s part of what draws me to this song but, also, so many carols are ruined with excessive orchestration. This is one of my favorites because of its simplicity.
Peace on earth, Goodwill to men (Not counting Klingons!)
:-)
It was a Klingon that saved Kirk in The Final Frontier, after all. They should get a little good will for that, at least. Besides, there’s Worf!
LOL...I know. (((A little Haiku for you:)))
B’lannah and Worf
They have changed my attitude
And caused it to Morph.
I didn’t know B’lannah so I looked them up on Google. It asked me if I meant
Banana wharf
She was a half-klingon/half-human babe on Voyager.
(((It would seem that I am an even worse Trekkie than you! LOLOLOLOLOLOL!))))
That’s why! I’m still trying to force my way through the first season.
LOL...have seen them ALL at least once hehehehe.
Now Deep Space 9, THAT I’ve watched multiple times.
Its popular to hate it on the net, but I liked Voyager. Conversely, DS9 seems to be the most respected online since the original.
I even liked the much maligned and abused “Enterprise”.
My most unfavorite was TNG.
While it doesn't include all the verses, the Trail Band's version does feature the fourth verse and is set to the melody "Waltham" (1872), which, in my opinion, is far and away the best melody for the song. This is the best recorded version of I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day" that I have heard, so I added it to my Youtube playlist.
I’m so glad you like this one. I have an absolutely massive collection of Christmas CDs, and they’re all uploaded to our file system so that I can sort by carol name. When I go to make a video, I play through all versions of that carol over and over again until I can find one that has the words clear enough to work for a music video, and one that I will want to listen to many times.
Some of my favorite pieces won’t upload to YouTube, but the playlist has a link to my Christmas page where they can be downloaded. The Jug Mountain Band, like the Trail Band, has some fantastic pieces that are perfect for holiday listening.
And I agree completely with your analysis of this particular carol. It was very difficult to find one whose words were worth interpreting because they included the later verses. I didn’t know it was set to Waltham. Thanks for that information.
My favorite carol is one that I sang in high school and I have yet to find a recording I’m willing to use. A more common version has different lyrics and doesn’t soar. If you ever hear of a good version, it would be greatly appreciated.
While shepherds watched their sheep by night,
Glad tidings brought
an angel bright.
How great their joy! (Echo)
Joy, joy, joy! (Echo)
Glory to God in heav’n on high! (Echo)
“Fear not at all,” he said to them,
“Jesus is born in Bethlehem!”
How great their joy! (Echo)
Joy, joy, joy! (Echo)
Glory to God in heav’n on high! (Echo)
There shall ye find in stable mean,
Christ who shall save the world from sin.”
How great their joy! (Echo)
Joy, joy, joy! (Echo)
Glory to God in heav’n on high! (Echo)
Jesus we hasten to adore,
Grant us Thy blessing ever more.
How great our joy! (Echo)
Joy, joy, joy! (Echo)
Glory to God in heav’n on high! (Echo)
