Bob Costas: Stand for anthem, then take a knee
CNN ^ | September 30, 2017 | Alexandra King

NBC Sports commentator Bob Costas suggested Saturday that protesting NFL players should wait until "the last note" of the national anthem to take a knee.

Costas's comments came a week after NFL players locked arms to protest President Donald Trump's criticisms of those who kneel during the National Anthem.

But the veteran sports journalist told CNN's Michael Smerconish that he believed a different approach could be more effective.

"The idea of linking protests, no matter how legitimate the issue you are protesting, directly to the National Anthem is not just offensive to the love-it-or-leave-it crowd. It actually causes ambivalent feelings, at best, among many people who are sympathetic to the issue but see the anthem as representing a lot of different things, including the country's ideals and aspirations," Costas said.

"To me, perhaps the most effective thing to do would be to stand for the national anthem, but, the second the last note is struck, take a knee," he suggested.

This tactic would also, purely from a practical perspective, ensure greater exposure, Costas argued.

"Most of the time, unless it's the Super Bowl or World Series and you want to see the singer, they're in commercial during the anthem. Now, you're going to see it," he said.

I am surprised that other half-pint Mike Lupica hasn’t chimed in.

I swear he thinks that the public sits around waiting for him to tell them how to think.

Taking a knee at the last note of the Anthem links the protest to the Anthem, which he just admitted hurts their cause (whatever that far-left knee protesting cause may be at the moment). Leftists are fools.

Yeah, how about the NFL do the right thing and tell their players to stand at attention, hand over heart, no talking or other antics. Show respect to our nation or you're fined or suspended or both.

The media and the people like, Costas, are looking for ways to legitimize this disrespect displayed on the field, instead of standing up for the right thing.

BTW, my name for Colin is Krapinyourpants.

Didn’t Curt Shilling get fired for expressing his political views at work?

Why on earth would it be acceptable for anybody else, regardless of political stripe?

NFL players constantly doing good deeds? When?

Certain teams have very active community engagement organizations that encourage the players to pick a cause (literacy programs, Make a Wish, and childhood illnesses are common), and they help them set up player foundations supporting them.

The Patriots in particular expect every player to support not only their individual event, but team-sponsored events. Many players keep these going in the Boston area long after they change teams or leave the league.

Not sure how relevant it is, but they do exist.

Black millionaires claiming the U.S., which gave them the opportunity for riches beyond their wildest dreams, is racist, is like Bill Clinton’s wife accusing anyone of being a misogynist. I want them to tell me where else in the world they would’ve had that opportunity.

Look, Bob, the players have already told us what they are and what they believe. We believe them to be wrong, closed-minded fools who have been so snookered by a liberal media/PC/poor education/entitlement society for so long that they are, in large measure, part of the problem and not a means to the solution of the very things they seek to redress. They are, in all likelihood, way past becoming “woke” (why not use their terms?) We will not be fooled into believing otherwise simply because they figure out some new arrangement of the optics.

Geez, the liberal mind is a terrible thing to try to figure out!
