Microsoft Win 10 Update Just Screwed The Old Games Again
Wuli | 9/30/2017 | Wuli

Posted on 09/30/2017 7:49:41 AM PDT by Wuli

Allowed Windows 10 latest update/build to run on my PC last night. It ended shortly before I went to bed, and I shut down the PC.

The morning I could not execute my Win 7 games - Solitaire, Spider Solitaire, Freecell, Majong. All the "run as administrator" and "compatibility" and "compatibility troubleshooting stuff" didn't do a dam thing. NOTHING, not even reinstall of the games and then all the compatibility stuff again worked. Nada, zilch.,

I had expended considerable effort from XP to Win 7 and then to Win getting versions of these games that would run, after each Windows version transitions.

Each time I had to jump through some hoops to get them working again, but once they did in Win 10, I had passed through previous Win 10 regular updates (not the same as a new build) and kept them working.

This time I had to roll back the whole Win 10 update that installed last night.

Legally I know Microsoft is not required to keep these older style games running under new Windows versions.

Regardless, I sure wish the threat of a class action lawsuit convinced them to quit screwing it up, as each time some geeks can be found that show how to do some tricks (that Microsoft knows about) to get the games running again. So, what they have been doing, from XP to Win 7, from Win 7 to Win 8, from Win 8 to Win 10 and in Win 10 updates, that screw up the games, has been unnecessary and preventable, if they - Microsoft - cared to put some attention to it.

Just makes me blood-pressure-up-mad each time.

I have heard Vista was a dog..but it is my first and only computer so of course I didn’t notice the difference many seemed to complain about. ....Still using Windows 7....opted not to change.

I agree about MS....it’s about booting people fro what they like to buy their recent products and this by force.

“I wasted many hours playing that old pinball game that came with Windows 98.”

LOL! We just found an old Dell laptop in the back of a drawer with XP. Pinball is on it. I copied it in to my Windows 10 laptop. Is is addicting. (I’d like to get Majong Titans, which is on the Windows 7 laptop in another room.)

I’d rather all you guys switch to new games anyway, like World of Tanks Blitz. It’s free!

WOW! That's a graphics card!

I've had similar problems with Mint on a couple of machines. I agree with you that it's probably just your graphics driver.

If your motherboard has built-in graphics you could try removing your NVIDIA card and connecting your monitor to the motherboard. If the graphics work in this setup you could then go ahead and download all of the updates for your version of Linux. Then reinstall your graphics card and reboot to see if the Linux generic NVIDIA driver will run.

I've done this a few times with success.

I've running older NVIDIA cards on my two Linux Mint machines. Mint 17.3 32-Bit runs the proprietary NVIDIA driver just fine.

My other machine is running 18.2 KDE 64-Bit. The NVIDA driver for this machine gave me a lot of quirky problems. This machine actually runs better using the generic Linux Nouveau driver.

In one of these machines (can't remember which) I actually had to go into the BIOS and flick a switch off to get the graphics to behave.

Sounds like you know the source of the problem.

Good luck!

I used to play, and love, the game “Double Trouble” — the original, not the revised version. Can’t find it anywhere!!

“Wonder (update) if that is why when I try and open an excel document it trys to open in the new excel 365 (wants me to buy) even though it was created on excel office 2007? Started happening a few days ago?”

Can you right-click on the file, and click on the “open with” option”? If so, it’ll give you a list of suggested programs. If the Office 2007 Excel option doesn’t show up, at the very end it should let you find the program on the PC. Then just find it in the file path where it’s installed. I’ve been doing that for a long time now, except that I’m going to Office 2003 instead of the 365 junk.

I just looked at the specs for your computer. No motherboard graphics.

If you have an older graphics card you might try slipping that in temporarily to see if you can finish updating the Mint OS.

well most people want to use windows as their main os- not allowing it Internet access won’t appeal to many- I use linux as my online os and windows 7 as my offline only os for games and photoshop and programs that only work in windows- but that scvenario won’t work for some

WOW! That's a graphics card!

Truth be told I'm kinda embarrassed I bought this machine since I'm not a gamer at all. Period.

Here's the whole boring story... I wanted a laptop to go with me on my eclipse trip in August to Nebraska. I picked up this refurbishment Dell laptop from Fry's. Solid State drive, Windows 10. Zoom it's fast. Put Mint on it... Zoom-squared. My Linux Box at work has a solid state drive, it's decently fast, too. I was sold on Solid State drive systems.

When I got back home after the eclipse I kept looking at my old Win 7 desktop that has been limping along for a long time and figured this guy's got to go. So I listed all the components I thought I needed and poked around Fry's and MicroCenter's website, and for what it would cost to put together the machine, this G314 from Microcenter pretty much had what a wanted. The 1070 graphics card just came along for the ride since I didn't have any preference in that component. Shoulda spec-ed things out more carefully never realizing the graphics card might be a problem with Linux Mint. So here I have a Porsche transmission that I'm trying to stick on a Ford F-250 truck.

I have a question posted on a Linux Mint Forum asking how long it might be before their stock kernel will handle my machine. Mint 19, 20, 21?

“most people want to use windows as their main os”

Oh... OK. I get it. I’m not a tech wiz (any more — used to be before retiring) so just deal with the general basics. Changing over to a different operating system is something I couldn’t take on.

I just looked at the specs for your computer. No motherboard graphics.

It's got normal video-in socket plugs in the expected spot, but they probably are dead. Guess that's why the instructions warned you not to plug the monitor cords into the stock locations but use the graphics card slots instead. Thanks for checking.

That Creators Update makes my Asus cm1745 crash and lock up like crazy so I had to replace the drive and install Linux Mint 18.2 and it works great ,even games on Playonlinux . The win 10 drive is over there hiding ,I stick it back in once in awhile for updates to see if they fixed anything , so far no go

Install Oracle VirtualBox and emulate your old operating systems. Then run your games on a virtual Win 7 machine. -PJ

Dang - complexity of that install and configuration exceeds my patience. But thanks for the tip.

My ASUS Ultra Zenbook laptop has Creators Update - absolutely ZERO problems and seems to manage memory better.

Yeah, after installing VirtualBox, you would have to have a source copy of the OS and install it on the virtual box as if it were a new computer.

I used Acronis True Image to save my Win 8.1 before I upgraded to Win 10. My ASUS motherboard provides a quick link to the BIOS where I can select which drive I boot from.
