U.S. Airlines are vying for attention as the Boeing 747 leaves their fleets, just as they did when it entered their fleets in 1970.

And the world’s aviation geeks are watching closely.

United announced Monday that its final Boeing 747 flight will take place Nov. 7 with a celebratory recreation of its first United flight from San Francisco to Honolulu.

Twenty-eight minutes later, at 3:47 p.m. Monday, Delta announced that it recently operated its final Boeing 747 Tokyo Narita-Honolulu flight (on Sept. 5), and that it had operated what were thought to be the final domestic 747 flights from Honolulu to Los Angeles to Detroit.

The 747 is a marvel. The 777 and 787 are stunning in their own capacities.

My favorite place to fly was Upstairs Business class on a 747. Best seat in the house. Quiet and more private.

Pan Am trans-Pacific clippers in the upper deck business class section and Singapore Air First Class to London. Thank you, Jesus for letting me experience that. The Boeing 747 will always be Queen of the Skies.

I used to live near O’Hare and always enjoyed seeing them take off.

I have never been on a 787, but I fly every year, from SFO to Manila and back. It’s a nice aircraft.

The 747 is one of the nicest airplanes ever built.

I had the opportunity to do that twice (well, four times, roundtrip!) to Hawaii. The company was paying for it thank goodness. I recall when the 747 first came out my dad brought me on a Rotary Club outing to the airport where they gave a tour of the new plane. I was ten, and even though it was the first plane I had ever been in, it sure made an impression.

The 747 was the most comfortable aircraft I flew in on my many trips to Europe. The newer Boeings were also pretty good but the Airbus aircraft had seats made out of concrete and were terrible.

I got to do that once back in the day - DC to Seattle. Still ranks as one of my best flights. In many ways better than the few first class flights I've had.

As a kid, the first time I flew in my life was on a 747, going from Seattle to Ohio. That has always been my favorite flight.

As a kid, my first commercial flight was on a TWA Constellation. It was over a decade before I got to fly on a jet. Being forced back into your seat by takeoff acceleration and flying so high that car headlights at night couldn’t be seen were what distinguished jet from prop, for me.

I always wanted to fly on one. Of all of my trips, never a 747.

DC-10 check
L-1011 (my fav) several times
And most of the others.

I used to have first class upgrades and enough miles for 2 roundtrips to Paris on TWA. Maybe I’m fortunate I never got to use them. Because it was during that time, too.

There was always a TWA 747 loading up for Paris whenever I departed Lambert - it was right across from my gate - used to see it nearly every week or every couple of weeks.

In 1974, I toured the Boeing factory in Everett, WA where the 747s were made. It was back in the day when you got REALLY good factory tours. There was a gallery around the enormous assembly room (the biggest building ever built!) and you could see the final assembly of LOTs of planes. I remember watching a video about the plane and seeing the flex load tests on the wings (yikes! do they bend!) and watching an over-rotation take-off where the rear end skidded on the runway for a long distance. I probably have pics from the tour somewhere.

I remember my first flight to Tokyo on a 747 (I think from Chicago) with a stop in Anchorage. It was a Pan Am plane and I think they were ferrying it to Tokyo because there were maybe 10 paying passengers on the entire plane! That was so weird.

Here's the Wiki pic of the inside of the assembly building:
