Cord-Cutting Explodes: 22 Million U.S. Adults Will Have Canceled Cable, Satellite TV by End of 2017

Research firm eMarketer cuts TV ad-spending forecast on accelerating pay-TV declines

Winter is here for cable and satellite TV operators.

American consumers are cancelling traditional pay-TV service at a much faster rate than previously expected, according to research firm eMarketer.

In 2017, a total of 22.2 million U.S. adults will have cut the cord on cable, satellite or telco TV service to date — up 33% from 16.7 million in 2016 — the researcher now predicts. That’s significantly higher than eMarketer’s prior estimate of 15.4 million cord-cutters as of the end of this year. Meanwhile, the number of “cord-nevers” (consumers who have never subscribed to pay TV) will rise 5.8% this year, to 34.4 million.

"Younger audiences continue to switch to either exclusively watching [over-the-top] video or watching them in combination with free-TV options,” said Chris Bendtsen, senior forecasting analyst at eMarketer. “Last year, even the Olympics and [the U.S.] presidential election could not prevent younger audiences from abandoning pay TV.”

Overall, 196.3 million U.S. adults will have traditional pay TV (cable, satellite or telco) this year, down 2.4% compared with 2016, eMarketer predicts. By 2021, that will drop to 181.7 million, a decline of nearly 10% from 2016. The number of pay-TV viewers 55 and older will continue to rise over the next four years, while for every other age cohort the subscriber tallies will decline.

By 2021, the number of cord-cutters will nearly equal the number of people who have never had pay TV — a total of 81 million U.S. adults. That means around 30% of American adults won’t have traditional pay TV at that point, per eMarketer’s revised forecast.

499 channels for liberals, liberal elites, and liberal victim group members.

Not One channel for Conservatives...

Why wouldn’t we want to pay for that? /s

You left out the 120 non English speaking channels!

I should add, as a general PSA, that this is the digitial antenna we got.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01KUXVKK0/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It doesn't need a clear line of site like satellite, so you don't have to mount it on the roof. Rather, it can be placed in an attic, etc. Ours is up in the garage rafters. We're pulling in 200 stations. 99% are junk, but at least it's free.

I’ve used my phone for my laptop internet but since I don’t have a tv or looked at them seriously what would I need to have to get it to recognize my phone?

“Next is Verizon...going to Walmart Smart Talk. Only thing I”ll keep is Century Link internet for $70/month.”

You might want to check out Tracfone. They provide the service to Walmart Smart Phone for less.

I have Verizon via Tracfone on my Samsung, and my wife has AT&T via Tracfone for her Android.

I’ve dumped it. Sick of rising prices and their arrogance. Got a digital antenna...42 channels for nothing...just like the old days. Except 39 more stations.

Ahh, good catch. So nice to be back on FreeRepublic from the comfort of my home rather than from ‘in-land but safe’ and away from the storm. I really hate hurricanes...

http://viki.com and http://dramafever.com

You can watch episodes for free, or pay a few bucks a month to go commercial-free.

And shows like “Goblin” are better than anything Hollywood is putting out these days.

If I had my way all we’d have is antenna for local TV Weather. I’m not a TV watcher. Much rather have a book and LEARN something. Do a lot of reading on alternative medicine, vitamins, and essential oils just got added.

D’Sousa is another favorite writer.

I have reduced my TV watching to CSI Miami, TV Land, and ME TV (local NJ channel showing 60’s sitcoms and police adventures).

Last night Hawaii Five-O, McGarrett held hostage in a prison riot. Danno and Chin save the day !

The providers pay too much for the stations they carry. Cable or satellite should cost no more that $100/month for every channel available. instead it’s over double that, why, no competition/monopolies

Comcast, et al, will compensate for this by exploding Internet access costs. There is more competition with internet and no competition for cable - internet access should drip while cable keeps soaring.

Hint: If you use an antenna for some of your TV watching, there are digital to analog converter boxes available that have the side benefit of being able to record shows from the antenna to a thumb-drive (You don’t even have to use the converter portion). It gives me the ability to record old shows like Gunsmoke and Rawhide from MeTV.

And they’re cheap-only about $25. It’s not the best device I’ve ever seen in that it’s clunky and the remote must be pointed right at it, but it works.

Heard for years that the quality of sporting events on antenna TV was better that cable or satellite. After a couple of years of cutting the satellite I can tell you they are.

It’s because the limited bandwidth of cable/satellite requires some signal compression. OTA doesn’t so there’s a chance of higher resolution.

Going on three years since I cut the cord. Was hard at first, but looking back I now realize that was mostly because I’d just developed ‘cable habits’. Significantly less TV viewing now and much better quality of life.
