A re-imagining of Steven J. Cannells 1981 cult classic The Greatest American Hero is flying back to development with a new creative team, a big new commitment and a big twist.
ABC has given a put pilot commitment to the half-hour single-camera project. In it, the unlikely (super)hero at the center Ralph Kinley (played by William Katt) in the original series is Meera, an Indian-American woman. The Greatest American Hero comes from Fresh Off the Boat writer-producer Rachna Fruchbom and Nahnatchka Khans Fierce Baby. 20th Century Fox TV, where Fierce Baby is based and Fruchbom recently signed an overall deal, will co-produce with ABC Studios.
Written by Fruchbom, the re-imagining of The Greatest American Hero centers around Meera, a 30-year-old Indian-American woman from Cleveland, whose talents include tequila drinking and karaoke and not much else. Then some aliens entrust her with a super suit to protect the planet, and the world has never been in more unreliable hand
“Loose” definition of “loser” - he was terrified of flying and a bit of a screw up but his heart was always in the right place.
But you can’t show those qualities in a character race/sex you’re trying to promote.
I liked that show. Too bad Robert Culp’s ego tanked it.
But I won’t bother with this one. I’m not the correct ethnographic, so I don’t want to appropriate anybody’s culture or anything.
I forgot about that!
I remember the first episode was hysterical...I started taking Lamaze classes when that was first on, so it was end of 1978 or early 1979.
article says 1981..so it wasn’t when I said..2nd pregnancy, not first..
But when you read, “talents include tequila drinking and karaoke...” you knew it couldn’t be.
She doesn’t have ANY talents.
Connie Sellecca was fun to watch too!
No thanks
the first Greatest American hero was one of our favorites....and its theme song back then one of the best....
Lord I hated the original show. Is this is for creativity in Hollywood. I thought the original was kind of hokey when it was on.
Let’s go on and bring back “My Mother the Car”, with Hillary Clinton, “B.J. and the Bear”, “Moving On”, why not even “Then Came Bronson”.
Say what you want, but back when there were only three networks they had something for everyone.
Ralph KinleyHinkley, actually. They changed it to Hanley in the middle of the first season after the assassination attempt on Reagan.
>>>Lets go on and bring back My Mother the Car, with Hillary Clinton, B.J. and the Bear<<<
The remake should be called “B.J. and the Intern”.
BJ and the Pear, starring Bill and Hillary Clinton.
I could have gone all night without reading that definition.
Back in the golden age of movies you would sometimes hear the term Gay, but it did not mean what it does today. Wonder when that changed.
Then I read of a term used back in the 1930’s and 1940’s to describe someone who was gay, “He Flies”
Yeah, not my cup of tea, either.
GAH tried to introduce a female lead in 1981. It never even made it to TV. You can find the pilot and wince like everyone else did.
About 5 minutes was enough to turn me off.
Gender rebooting movie and series is not creative or fresh or new.
Plus its only one way gender rebooting, so for half the viewers they’re not gonna care.
Just come up with something non female takeover, non social justice bs.
Where’s the photo of the Indian babe hottie?
What a waste of time.
