Florida Gov. Rick Scott Wednesday urged residents of his state to "be as aggressive as we are" in planning for the approach of monster storm Hurricane Irma.
"We're going to have wind, rain, and storm surge," Scott told ABC's "Good Morning America" program. "We don't know where it will hit, likely Fort Myers and Naples, as is Miami. The Keys are already evacuating."
The storm will bring wind, rain and storm surge, and "water could cover your house, so I want everybody to understand the importance of this. This is bigger than Andrew," he said, referring to the last Category 5 storm to hit the U.S., which occurred in 1992. "It will have more storm surge than Andrew and it sure looks like it will barrel right down the middle of the state of Florida."

This storm could go up the gut of FL and drench the entire peninsula.

The Keys are a crappy place to either get into or out of, on the best of days. If thousands are trying to get out by going to Miami, it might be faster to simply swim across from Key West to the coast of the mainland, and maybe safer, too. The air evacuation routes would not be much better, as there is no major air port on the Keys, and boat evacuation is relatively slow, as well, only taking people to Fort Myers or Naples, which are as much threatened as the Keys. Any serious storm surge is almost certain to breach any see walls.
People now in the Keys are so screwed.

It makes sense to wait until you're sure as you can be where the storm is going. There's always the danger that people who react too soon will evacuate from their area to some place that is actually affected by the storm.
I am not evacuating, at least yet from Jacksonville area in NE Florida. I read somewhere this storm is bigger than the last 10 storms combined.
I had a hard time finding gas for the car this morning. Several stations had paper bags around the nozzles. But there was plenty of food and supplies at Publix store.
Irma should not cause comparable flooding like Harvey. Because Irma is moving at 15 mph, unlike Harvey which just sat over Houston area for multiple days. But Irma has higher wind velocity, so expect lots of wind damage.
